Okay so I'm planning an axle swap (already have 14bff, getting 60 this winter) but I still have 3.73s in my 10 bolts. I have a tbi 350 and a 700r4 with 35" tires, so the gearing is doing my 700r4 no justice. I can get gears reasonably cheap for the 10 bolts. Should I buy some and re-gear only to swap later, OR put the money towards the 14bff and Dana 60 swap?
If i put the money towards the swap it still is not going to happen until spring.

save the money for the dana 60 front.

waste of time for 10 bolt swap stuff if you already know you are going dana 60 .

plan is 39.5s

unfortunately youre correct, but the time is near :D

i just finished my 1ton swap, easy as hell, i didnt even tear nothin down, found a set i picked up for $500 w/ 4.56's from a 1978, and just bolted em right up. been drivin and wheelin with em ever since.
i would highly recommend settin your sights on doing it right the 1st time;)

edit: although 9 out of 10 cats will swear by tearing down the axles b4 install, i say EFF that and hit the trails (using common sense as to making sure what you have is adequate) i mean,, yea my kpins are almost due for a rebuild and im gettin low on brake pads, but thats easy stuff and can do when i feel like gettin drunk on a saturday, just put fresh fluid in and im lovin life kickin ass on the trails with insurance, and by insurance i mean DANA 60.....

Yea cant throw my 14 bolt in until i go through it because it aint in the best of shape. Plus i want rear discs right away cuz i hate drums. So i figure might as well go through it and have it done.

I'd at least go through the 14 & stick it in. You don't need disc's right away
unless the drums are cooked. One ton brakes blow off 10B. But it also depends on
the gears in the 14. At least one would be done (less discs that can be done later).
It's a waste sticking money in 10B's but if you plan to use it still this year, it's
cheaper then a new tranny.

yep the drums are toast. i can get all the brake parts reasonably cheap. depending on the 60 i get i may just leave the gears at 4.10 until i can afford to re gear.

Dave,

at some point he's got to decide whether he's after a pipe dream (K5 w/ 1-ton axles on 40s...), or whether he wants a vehicle that actually moves, is functional, and that he can take out to have a day of fun on the trails.

Sure, saving for that pipe dream is a laudable goal. In realistic terms, though, if it's never going to happen, then re-gearing the 10b to (finally) get a functional vehicle is a useful and very practical option.

thats kind of why i was asking. i can get new gears for the 10 bolts for $350 shipped from CCOR. so i may just go that option to have it good to go and then build the one tons over some time.
