Desert Trip 2016: Trip Report

'Bout time slacker. Just kidding! Finish this up and we need to get the discussion going for next year!

After breakfast loading up Streets & Trips with the map section that points us home. From here on it is one long ass day to drive 10hs straight home.

A twisty shot on the way out headed back to the Burr Trail

Now this is what keeps 90% of the RVers off the Burr Trail. These switchbacks are steep, tight and plenty

We stopped at the top for some obligatory photos

Earlier I said we camped about 20 miles…on second though, we camped more like 40 miles from Bullfrog

How Utah arches are formed. You watch, you come back here in a million years and there will be an arch there. Let me know

We didn’t really have to drive the 5 miles to BullFrog as we needed to go to Hanksville but hey, we came all this way….might as well check out the ferry. Plus I wanted to buy a stuffed bullfrog at the Bullfrog gift shop for my 3 year old daughter.

Here we are

Stopped at the Hite Marina overlook to have a look around. The verdict, its pretty damn dry here. So dry, the Hite Marina’s ramp is out of the water by a football field or two

From there we high tailed it to Junction 95 and 261 where we would say Good Bye to our friends Tony and Mark as they steer the Super Duty back towards Phoenix byway of Mexican Hat and we keep on truckin East for another 8+ hours

From there we laid the cameras down and put the hammer down well into the darkness to get back to Pueblo

Except someone snapped a Colorado pic in before the sun went down

After that the fun was pretty much over. From here it is all cleaning and licking wounds….and getting Mr. and Mrs. T back the airport…

The next morning T cleaned the Burb while I unpacked the K10
27865636926_7e50386012_c.jpg

Wholly crap it was hot this day inside and outside as we unpacked and cleaned. A good ole 103-degree Pueblo day
27865635536_b1b9136cf7_c.jpg

Clean, clean, clean all day then that night we all went to my 3yo daughter’s dance recital. She was so happy daddy and his friends rushed home for her first recital.
27865634346_dcd687f739_c.jpg

Then Sunday morning Mr. and Mrs. T were on their bird out of Pueblo back to Shitcago. The only two soles on the prop Buddy Holly Express plane out of Pueblo no less. No way in hell I would ever flight out of Pueblo and I travel by plane almost every week. Hell, as a native of Pueblo I’ve never even been to the Pueblo airport until they arrived. The South African’s didn’t think anything of taking a bush plane in and out of a small town.

Then started the truck deep cleaning and repairs. First up in priority was the Suburban because it is the family truckster and we had a family camping trip coming up pulling our travel trailer 6 hours away. The poor ole Polar Bear Suburban’s single state elcheapo paint took a beating too.

This right here….this is the shizzle to remove the past. After some elbow grease with the wheel and these 3M goodies the old dog came out better than it has ever looked.
27571440720_cf59d871f1_c.jpg

On the way to the carwash it became obvious the Burbs brakes where toast. I mean bad…. It appears my buddy got a little brake happy over Wolf Creek Pass as both rotors and drums were warped like a vinyl record on a tin roof and pads/shoes totally cremated. I removed and repainted the fender flares during the detailing
29159937736_6e443604d3_c.jpg

And the poor old K10 waited 5 weeks before it even got a car wash. The camper interior was cleaned the day after we arrived but the truck itself took second fiddle to the Burb.

How it looked until it got its bath 5 weeks after returning from the trip

This is pre-trip picture taken in early June before we left

After a big bath and wheeled out with the 3M goodies, fender flares removed and repainted....the paint on the K10 also looks better after this trip than it has since it was painted in 1998

And some people probably think this old tank only sits in the garage and goes to car shows

To think the entire thing looked like this a month before
27784240526_7cb8884646.jpg

That’s it….the story is over :dunno:

Does the camper not include shower/toilet? I guess I'm not sure what it's like inside there.

Nope, not enough room inside (If I had a longbed truck there probably would have been room inside). The shower is outside….. The toilet is whatever bush you find unless the ladies are with us, then we put the portapooper in the shower tent. The shower tent situation has changed a few times over the years. This picture shows a suspended shower tent. That one lasted two years and died.

The inside is small. Picture two beds, a sink, stove, big refrigerator, heater, tons of storage and that’s about it

Awesome stuff Larry. I can't wait to hit the road on some adventures like this. But I do believe my truck camper is a little to large for these types of adventures.

Maybe I misunderstood. What keeps you from adventuring with it? The desert is full of wide open spaces, width shouldn't be your limiting factor. Right?
Oh it's not going to keep me from adventuring, it's just going to limit what I try to attempt. Those tight trails are not possible with my set up.

Good write up as usual dude. Can't wait to experience this trip first hand.

Just re-read this thread again. Man I am envious! I hope I can retire young enough to do trips like this. Thanks Larry, you and Nick do the best trips and reports!

Thanks Big Ray! You don't need to retire....just load up the truck and go. If you just sit around and wait for the perfect time to go it will never happen. Just go!

Speaking of ole Nick, I actually would like to do another trip with Nick. We haven't traveled together since 2012. For some reason we can't get our schedules to line up for our annual Desert Trip.

Cool pic from 2012. Hole in the Rock trail. Not a sole around for many miles!

This. @Big Ray, you'll never have perfect timing, pick some time and go. Soon. You said you wanna join the overlanding trip. Well...start planning now, you're down to 7 or 8 months left. It's not going to accidentally happen, you need to get the ball rolling. You also have ample opportunities that are closer to your location.

Larry and Nick have both talked some about their day jobs. As has everyone who went on the overlanding trip. This stuff isn't for retired folks, it's for anyone who likes to get out there and GO!

oh, I understand all that guys. I just wind up using my vacation time on health issues with me & my Bride. I'm out today because I helped a young in' at work lifting a sheet of steel yesterday. Wasn't very heavy, just awkward. He was doing it himself, I jumped in before he hurt himself. Losing all that weight helped tremendously, but it looks like the damage is done.

I took my Bride to the e.r. a few weeks back, spent 2 days vacay time caring for her. I can go in 3 more years, that puts me at age 57. But I'll go to at least age 62.

It'll happen like most things in my life. the time will suddenly appear and it will be on! I'm working toward Dune fest in '18. I want to get my Grandson hooked early!

Great write up,great pix, great trucks, great frends, only leads to a great time,,as i sit and look outside it's 20deg and snowing , so it nice to read about something warm,,,your camper is about the same size as a chalet , ,the never have enough room,,thanks for the great stories .

Funny that both of you guys said basically the same thing at roughly the same time (about getting back together sometime). Kinda like the CK5 matchmaking service. :haha:

You know, I think the only time we have traveled together is that time back in '12. Hard to believe it has been that long already. I have traveled with our mutual friend Bill (guy with the Ramcharger (which he sold awhile back)) a time or two since. We usually camp together at Overland Expo, but that's not the same as actually traveling together. Larry usually travels earlier than my family becomes available to travel, so we end up going our own way.
