I gave my blazer to my son, he is moving to Denver and I think the axle or differential has gone out on him. He is starting a new job tomorrow (2/15) and is not in alot of funds. What might it cost to either swap the rear end or have an axle job done? It is broken down about 45 minutes outside of Denver and he needs alot of help. Any input is appreciated.

PLenty of guys in that area, I am sure they can help in some way.
I don't go there except summertime so i can't help now.

which direction from Denver??

A direct swap could be cheap, but unfortunately can take some time to locate the replacement axle with correct gears. You need to provide more information.

Correct me if I am wrong, but can't he pull the rear drive shaft, put it in 4WD, and drive like that for a few days?

Or will the rear shaft of the tranny slide out and leak oil?

My rear grenaded inside and wouldn't move, pinon just freewheeled. I put it in four high and drove it for a week while i got what i needed to swap it out.

about 150.00 for all, that was a year ago no probs with anything:woot:

Reminds me of the time my dad let my little brother drive his 79 k10. Front of the rear driveshaft fell out going down the interstate about 70, caught the pavement and grenaded the rearend. Precell phone days so he put into 4wd to make it the 20 miles home, overheated and toasted the engine about 5 miles from the house. Dad was pissed.

Cheapest fix would prob be to fine somebody around Denver with a spare rearend, even if it has the wrong gears.
