My downshift cable has never been hooked for the last few years. How much difference does this make? I was just thinking about replacing, but not sure if I need it.

I thought you had to have the detent cable hooked up. I broke mine installing a TBI spacer. I didnt drive it until I replaced it thinking that it wouldnt run right.

it can be bad if you dont manually shift down yourself. Otherwise if were talking about a th350, then no problem.

If it's a 700R4, I am utterly amazed it's still driving. That is a requirement to have it run right! If it didn't die, more power to you, you are super lucky.

Ummm, I doubt anyone is going to claim you don't need a tv..

I'm gonna have to assume this is a T350 transplanted... no 700r4 is going to run decent, let alone survive without a tv cable....

Its a 700R4 and has never been hooked up since 1995... then again I have gone through 2 trannies and just had this one rebuilt with all as much allison tranny parts possible. I will tell you this.. when no downshift cable hooked my truck tops out at 120 and runs damn strong at all speeds

when i bought mine and no one knew it was connected, it went a few hundred miles on the highway and some local all on 35"s, we had no idea, and it was probably beat to **** anyways, but still..

and yes you can hook up the tv cable

what is a tv cable/ faq.

The cable I am talking about looks likes electric wire notan actual cable per say. LMC has it i their catalog as part number 32-4816 on page 100. says it engages the passing gear when pedal is depressed

Uh:confused: Did you read the link? All the info you'll need is on that site. Unless it's not the TV cable you are talking about.

This whole thread makes no sense.. LMC's description of a tv cable as a detent cable is very inaccurate... It controls line fluid pressure in the trans and is critical, unlike a detent cable on a 350.. It does much more than "it engages the passing gear when pedal is depressed"....

Your trans will nuke in short order without this hooked up.. Thus maybe why you've gone thru 2 transmissions..

spend an hr and read thru that link and this one http://www.tvmadeez.com/article/index.php

Ryoken... This why I was asking... If I need to hook this "detent cable" or not. I had no idea what this cable really did and since it was never has been hooked up, I thought it did not matter much. Although like you said I burned some trannies, I just figured thr 700R was not a good tranny it was typical to kill a few while catchin air down on the farm.
I quess I need to order another one and try to feel around on top the tranny for the location to hook it up..

Please humor us all and take a pic of your tranny pan and post it so we can verify EXACTLY which tranny you have. A 700R4 without a TV cable will barely move and shift let alone run for a while.

You got it. In 87, I thought only 700R4 was used. I traded for the Ghost in 1995 and I am the third owner.. Hell I guess one of the others owners could have changed it.

But since I have had 4 trannies in 12 years, could be why. The first lasted 3yrs went out with rear axel, the 2nd only lasted a few months, gave new rebuilt for free, and then went out 100 mph when I threw a rod and 3rd GM rebuilt from dealership last several yrs, but was partially destryed when used to steal and ATM by some hoods.
I know for that since the second tranny no cable hook up. I will take a picture tomorrow of the cable and tranny pan..

The electric thing you are talking about is for a TH400. Just tell us the shape of the pan and we can ID it, bhut a 700r4 would burn up in about 100 miles with no kick down cable.

this might help. Just look at these pics and choose which one yours is shaped like

n/m the last 2 they were just on the picture itself when i copied it
