Detroit locker shock load

I've got a stock M1008 rear 14 bolt with Detroit locker and 4.56 gears. This is my first locker, so. Is it normal to bang when engaging and disengaging? When I jack up the rear axle and turn the drive shaft by hand, the pinion to ring gear have perfect backlash (no slop), but if I keep turning the driveshaft the locker engages after spinning the driveshaft about 2 inches (or so). I'm guessing this is some serious shock loading for the locker. Again, does this sound like normal operation for this locker? Seems to have a lot of backlash in the locker. Thanks.

it doesnt engage until there is power applied.so it would take a couple of revs to get it to fully engage or disengage.

Just wait til you have that locker bang the first time while driving it. First time it happened to me my first reaction was to look in the mirror...i honestly thought my tranny had exploded and I'd see pieces all over the ground behind me! :haha:

Thankfully it only happens on rare occassions. It may have done it to me three times in 2 years?

It is normal though...just the nature of how it works.

I remember one time when that happened to me, the whole ass of the truck jurked and I thought something went to chit. I had it happen several times but that one was the worst.

Okay. Thank you for the responses. I've been driving it and nothing's fallen out yet. Just seemed like a lot of load force to me.

I've had more than one passenger scream and grab at the dash when the lockers banged. Its pretty unnerving when you're not expecting it.

Hey bud, the locking hubs I had were trashed, sorry I didn't get back to ya sooner. Did you get a new set?

Even better is reversing and turning out of a parking space in a crowded lot.

Click click click BANG.

"Hey, your rear axle is making noises!" says the random guy running up.

"Yep, it does that."

He seemed confused.

holy crap, i thought something seriously bad happend. i pulled over and shook the hell out of everything and looked for loose bolts. i took a right turn and accelerated and straightened out and BOOM!! thw whole truck jerked to one side freaking me out. only does it a few times a year, but when it does i know what it is now.
yes its loud and awesome.

Meaning you only put your foot into it this many times while turning?

Guess i drive my beast differently on the street. Didnt' realize there was any throttle between "on" and "off" in my burb. :haha:

Always punch it coming out of a turn. The right conditions/power will send the rear sideways :p:. I love lockers...

that reminds me, I need to rotate my tires... :doah::D

I found it did it most often accelerating away from a light. If the right conditions were met as I came to a stop it'd be all set up to bang and scare the sh!t out of me.

My Jimmy was manual tranny, so things could and did 'unload' a little between gears most of the time.

What I did notice a lot at first was 'locker steer' between gears. On the gas the it would want to steer right just a touch. During the shift (off the gas) that effect would go away so the truck would want to head left just a little. I got used to it very quickly though...

that's pretty much my experience to a T. claire gets a bit, ummm, illogical, if you will, about cars and noises and such... love it when the detroit pops and she's riding passenger. good stuff. :D

You just need to explain that vehicles are all female. There is no logic, strange noises can be expected at any time, nothing a few soothing noises and TLC won't cure...

...that's dirty...

Anybody had the whole "CLANG BANG lane change" thing before? I remember 9-10 years ago when I was new to this a lot of people talked about lockers grabbing and jerking them sideways while on the road...but having now had two locked vehicles with them I've never had it happen. Granted, both were longer vehicles (Ranger extended cab shortbed and Big Ugly) but never had it happen like the horror stories said. Under steer and some jerking and banging occasionally but that's about it.

had it all happen to me...luckily my cousin and the guy who did my 1 ton swap gave me a heads up...the first few times it did it i stopped and checked things out too...worse one for me was turnin on an entrance ramp to the interstate...making a swoopin turn while on tha gas then let off jus a lil for the curve, get back on tha gas when straight, woo hoo, look out shoulder/ditch, here i come...lol, good times...i wouldnt trade it for anything tho...

Okay, I guess it's normal. Mine pushes your right on accleration or shifts and left when decelerating. And it bangs coming out of turns just as mentioned. These things fail very often? I guess it's take the whole diff out if it goes huh?
