I have a 1986, M1031 with only 04120 original miles, 14 blt with 4.56 and Detroit Locker.
is there any difference between this 1986 Detroit Locker, and a new Detroit Locker?

Any upgrades with a new one versus the 1986?

The reason I ask is because I'm trying to decide between swapping the Detroit and gears from the M1031, with the 4.56 and Eaton Limited slip from my blazer with only about 02000 miles on the gears and limited slip.

Thanks,

Ed

I have no idea if there were any changes in design. I kind of doubt it, but....

So you really just have to decide if you want a locker, or limited slip.
Correct ?

Yes. Somewhere in the early 90's they changed to a "soft locker". I'm not real sure what was changed but I had a friend that had one and his did not have the noticeable locking / unlocking that mine did (bought in '88). Mine was very active and very noticeable when it locked. I think the change was to make the unit stay locked more thereby cutting down on people being freaked out by the action.

I have a post 2010 unit and have no clunking or noise from it, just the occasional tire chirping going around a corner.

Bought my detroit in 2004.. it just unlocked at a redlight.. i didnt flinch but people next to me jumped.... lol... damn thing rattles my frame!!!!

My 84 C10 shortbox has a Detroit out back. It's loud and does some weird things. Pops, bangs, ratchets. Can be a handfull in the rain with the short wheelbase and light weight....wide tires probably aren't helping it much either. When on the throttle it works awesome and is predictable though, just when off throttle it has a mind of it's own.

So locker in Horton is from 1984, factory Detroit because military axles.

The Detroit I had before was advertised as a soft locker, new and improved. Horton's wheelbase is longer but I don't think you could tell. Both my Detroit's have been very well behaved

Yes, going with a Detroit one way or the other.
I was wondering if there were any upgrades done on the Detroit locker after the 1986 M1031 that I have. Only 04120 miles on this truck.

If there were upgrades, then I would sell this 14blt from the 1031 and buy a new Detroit locker, if no upgrades then I just may install it into my blazer.

Thank you,
Ed
