Could'nt find anything when I searched.

When I let of the pedal and slow down I get a clunk coming from the rear. Usually only hear it 20mph and slower and not all the time. This is while driving straight not in a turn. The installation manual says there is backlash in the detroit, but only talks of hearing noise during a turn. When I set up the ring/pinion backlash was around .006. Is this normal for a detroit? I have only run a detoit in CUCVs in the military and that was some time ago.

Thanks in advance.

it might be the gap in the detroit that ur hearing like u were talking about, all my friends put detroits in and in park now their trucks can move about 10" or so back and forth. i think it just adds onto the backlash from the ring and pinion.

That's what I first thought. Lower u-joint is a new Napa P447 and the upper felt good. I'm thinking it's got to be the built in backlash. Even shifting into gear I can feel it. I had my wife put it in drive/reverse, stand on the brake and hit the fuel and can't see any axle wrap that might be binding the lower joint.

My Detroits to the exact same thing. It's perfectly normal too. Just part of the locking and unlocking of the diff.

Oh, a locker. When I read the title of the thread, I thought you were talking about the gunshots.

every now and then I hear a KABANG!!! and the frame rattles.... it scared me the first time or 2... now it scares the ones next to me!!! :haha:

mine does this, but my rear end is set up rather loosely or thats what i thought,
does everyone with a 14bff detroit set up have alot of play in their driveline?

climb under, when parked on flat ground ofcourse, and grab the driveshaft and twist, how many degrees would you say it turns?

Only in this hobby do men talk about their rear ends being loose, and requiring special lubricants for limited slip rear ends.

On topic, my rear end makes funny noise too ... especially after I have Mexican.

Though I mostly remember my Detroit banging around corners, but also when backing down the driveway.

Mine is noisy too. I get the clunking going straight too but usually after a corner. It's more like a loud click. Sounds like the teeth locking together. It has gotten noisier over the years (7). Also there's a ton of play in the driveline. It bucks around when I let out the clutch in tight corners. If I chock the wheels and leave it in neutral I can turn the driveshaft about 1/3 turn with my hand. I'm going ARB when I get them money.

My driveshaft turns about 1/3 of a turn. Mine is bad enough that I took the cover off thinking I messed up the gear install.:doah: It's just the Detroit.:eek1:

1/8th turn

I first thought was I screwed up the gear backlash. I know it was .005-.006 thousands. I was going to ask before I pulled the cover off. :D

Same here.....I usually covers up any noises my Rear Diff is making.

Thanks guys

i have about a 1/4 turn of play in my shaft....my drive shaft that is, just so no one gets mixed up. all this rear end talk is making me nervous about some of you guys.

Maybe it is just the detroit then, i always thought i had too much backlash too. Well guess i dont need to pull the cover after all.
