Ok, now i'm in the market to buy a router. I like the Dewalt tools and i've looked at reviews on the Dewalt DW618 and there are mixed reviews. Some people have had issues with the motors burning up, others with the spindle lock breaking, and others with the adjustment ring. Naturally you can't satisfy everyone and depending on how someone uses a tool or takes care of it (or lack of) will depend on how long it will last. Does anyone here have any experience with the Dewalt DW618 or have another suggestion for a good router that won't break the bank?

I spent my 4 yrs in highschool in basically the best woodshop in teh state. My teacher had won the golden bear award at the state fair for like 23 yrs.

Anyways, the ONLY router he would ever recommend was the original style porter cables. I'm a big advocate for spending money that is appropriate for the amount you will use it....but yah.

The shop teacher personally owned probably 75% of the shop, and only allowed us to use the best/most accurate tools out there.
The porter cables were always what we used.

Not necessarily this exact power rating, but this style.

yup, routers are one that Porter Cable pretty much rules at... the other is electric DA sanders...

Hewlet packard, Cisco/Linksys, Motorola but stay away from Netgear, and D-Link - Junk. :rotfl:

Except the Linksys is as much consumer-grade disposable junk as the D-Link and Netgear.

Plus, the firewall on ANY of them makes the bits fall off :haha:

I have read that the Porter Cable is THE router to buy so i'm heading to Home Depot to take a peek at what they have.

Sorry Scott, I couldn't resist and at least someone got a kick out of it.

yup, great move on the porter. dewalt does cordless tools ok, not much else in the woodworking world. Ive run the same 1/2 hp porter in my table for more than 10 years. kickass tool indeed.

I know you already bought a router (and Porter Cable makes great routers), but I will say that I have two Dewalt routers and they have been excellent. I love the D-handles and variable speed! I haven't seen any problems with them in 7 years. As for electric DA's, DeWalt, hands down! I've seen others burn out way too quickly!

I've worked in several different cabinet shops while in HS and college, and now do woodworking at home (furniture when I get a chance). PC routers, DW sanders, Senco guns, Unisaw's, etc...

You get a chance to use that Porter Cable much yet, scott? I'm jealous.....and am posting on here as a method of keeping myself from going and buying more tools/parts that i can't afford:whistle:

I have used it for the intial project i bought it for and soon to be using it again for another project. That router kicks ass. I highly recommend it for anyone else looking for a router.
