Diagnostic advice needed, 97 7.4

Keep in mind that the only thing the Platinum plug does for you is extends the service life close to 100K miles. My 96 Impala also specs a Platinum plug but I just run a standard plug and no issues (other than still having a thick wallet).

It specifically called for it so I ran them. Sometimes I don't ask questions. :D

I ask myself why would I want to spend $96 on a set of plugs when I can buy a set for less than $24 that do the same job. I'm not the kind of person that believes you can or should run a set of plugs for 100K miles so no use for platinums here.

Just a little update. As of right now I believe the problem was just ****ty gas. I ended driving it and burning out that gas and dumping In a fresh tank of 91.
It's running much better and seems to be back to normal.

I do have a few parts left that I haven't added that ill do next time I'm at my buddy's shop.

That is the coil plug wire
New o2 sensors
Cap and rotor
New fuel filter (again)
Also it seems I have a decent exhaust leak. I'm gonna track that down when I put in a new muffler

Must have been some nasty stuff.

From your info it was either bad gas or..... you just replaced the air filter with K&N right? Now take out your MAF sensor and clean the oil off of it from the K&N oiled filter! You'll be fine...

If it is before or anywhere near the O2 sensor? This is an issue...

Good call on the maf clean out. K&ns are always overly damp. I'm not sure I haven't found it yet. But I got 4 new o2 sensors to put in so that'll give me a chance to check

CHECK THE CAP AND CHANGE IT. My vortec 454 did the same exact thing and it was the cap. It had small cracks almost too small to see but it was arcing between a few posts internally and firing two plugs at a time.
Also those engines call for a platinum plug, not a standard plug.

100 Internet points for you. Finally got a chance to take it to a buddy's shop. Changed the cap and rotor along with a few other things. Cap had massive corrosion on all contacts and you could see where the arcing was causing issues. My big baby running like a champ once again.
Also did the rotor, new O2 sensors just cuz I had it up on the lift.

Glad to hear that's all it was. I know when mine went out it was very abrupt and I could hardly get it back to the house it was so bad.

Yeah. Honestly the bad gas was worse. But once That was taken out of the equation the cap was still pretty bad. It would've been bad on its own but with the gas man I thought the ole bitch was done for
