I have a major problem I think. My new to me diAlarc 250 starts to sizzle somewaht like A steak and smoke within seconds of turning on. The coating that is around the windings inside looks as if it has dried and possibly cracked if this is the problem can it be fixed. Any help would be great as I can't afford to replace. BTW I have never used this welder so I'm notsure if it was thus way when purchased.

I don't have any idea what is wrong, but it doesn't sound good. Do you have anything connected to the machine like a HF box, stinger, etc? Do any of your local welding supply outlets offer machine repair services?

No nothing hooked to machine. The local weld shop closed a year or so back. Guess I'll hAve to try and find a repair shop within driving distance.

Have you blown it out recently? If not first disconnect the power then pull the side covers and blow it out with compressed air really well. See if that helps.
