Useful for the trail, but I dont recall packing bearings being quite that.. difficult? I just clean the bearings, dry it, chuck it in the tub of... bearing grease! Fold over a few times, and there you have it. Am I doing something wrong?

I don't know, but a hand full of bearing grease and a pair of rubber gloves work for me. The vacuum sealer looks faster and cleaner, though.

I would say that the vacuum sealer is a great idea, and cleaner than doing with the rubber gloves. Plus it allows you to have them packed in grease on the trail, rather than carrying grease and bearings separately. I think I am going to try this when I repack my front end next week. Might be a little easier.

I think there point was more that. You have a bearing in a nice weathertight package, and a U-joint in the same conditions where it can't just fly apart and loose needle bearings.

That's kinda funny that they used that tech tip. It's been on my website for at least 2 years! Wonder where they picked it up from.

To think I just stored the assorted spare bearings in an old tub of grease...

Here's my tech tip: Get a small chinese plastic food container. They are grease proof (tested because the food doesnt leak out all of its greasy goodness), durable, and best of all, easy to open and close. fill bottom 1 " or so with grease. Add bearings. Squish. store bearings inside until ready for use...

Yeah but try bringing that on a trail ride. I cannt keep my drink cup from spilling all over the place. And that the mess would be almost impossible to clean up if the tub popped open. Must less the dirt that it would fall in. Cause you know it would.

The vacum sealer works great becuase it forces grease into the bearing. You have to know how to properly pack a bearing by hand...Just dropping it in the tub isnt how pack a bearing. There are ways to do it fast, but non are that clean. Vacum sealer is fast, easy, does a great job and you can store extras for future use...

The small size space bags from Wal-mart work good too. I use my shop vac to pull the air out. They are pretty durable.

am i the only one that does it the hard and messiest way? i don't use gloves. just put a little grease in hand and push the bearing down into it til it squeezes out the other side whilst turning the bearing at the same time. i guess the vaccuum sealer would work too

you dont take it on the trail...you pack it all before hand...

My dad had this thing that is like two cones with a grease gun fitting at the top, you put the bearing between the two cones then use a grease gun to push grease through the bearing. Thats what I've always used.
