Did I kill my battery from overcharging voltage regulator?

In my K5, I was driving home and suddenly my alternator belt started squealing and my volt gauge (aftermarket Autometer) pegged out past 18 volts.
I was stuck in a line of traffic for about 15 minutes with it running like this. When I checked under the hood, my Optima red top had been squirting fluid out of the breather holes. I cut the alt belt off and drove home just on the battery.

Did I do any damage to the battery where I need to replace it for safety or reliability reasons? It's a 140 amp Powermaster alt if that makes any difference.

They don't like to be over charged or over heated during charging.
It's possible it was harmed.

The most noticable thing is that it won't hold a charge.
