i went just almost to the bottom of the bolt. just give the bolt enough to grab onto and you shouldnt have any leaks. the main thing to do is make the lip at the back as smooth as you can. the whole purpose is to make the diff slide over the rock instead of grab it.

I got it to leak last weekend but not because I cut to far into the diff. I just didn't shave the cover down enough and a rock grabbed the cover and peeled it back. Once the cover is trimmed right I don't think I will have a problem. I didn't when I had my last cover trimmed right. (took the old cover off to put a new plated cover on)
