Did TBI K5's have different air cleaners?

I'm putting the junk onto my truck that I need to get through smog. It's really, really depressing. I had all my wiring and hoses beautifully routed and organized and stuff like the EGR valve is really making it ugly. The EGR won't clear the valve cover hold down and barely clears the connection at the TBI. I'd have to remove the EGR to disconnect it. I don't know what I'm going to do if they insist on having the air pump installed.

I have TBI now instead of carb and I'm finding my (old rusty) enclosed air cleaner won't even come close to clearing the distributor and other stuff with the TBI. Is there a TBI version of the air cleaner that has more built in standoff? If so, anyone have on they want to unload?

Here's what it looked like before these jerks decided to ruin it for me:

Maybe I'll post an "after" picture later. :doah:

on top of the TBI throttle, there is a 1"-2" round spacer for the PCV hose, the air cleaner sits on that. That may be what you need. As far as the EGR and the valve cover, mine is an 87 and has central bolted covers so I can't help you there. Best of luck smog is the biggest load of B.S. there is.

I don't know how Arizona does it but from reading your post and looking at your sig i'm guessing you installed TBI on the 83 K5 listed in your sig? Here in California if you "upgrade" you have to visit the smog referee in order to have the truck smogged and they will issue a sticker to affix to the A pillar so it can be smogged any place in the future.

I see a lot of smog threads and people struggling to get their old smog systems in order for inspection purposes:

My question to you is, why not find a seedy station and just buy your sticker?

May not be "legal", but hell, seems like the simplest solution.

Mastiff, I went to the UofA, and I know for a fact that there's places in Tucson that'll sell you a sticker for like $60. All they do is put a newer car on the sniffer, enter in your vin info, look over their shoulder a few times, and voila. Legal.

Yeah, I lived in CA many years ago. I thought you could basically ask to be treated as a newer model of your vehicle if you installed all the smog stuff appropriate for that year.

I can't seem to find any good info for AZ in terms of what the real rules are. I don't think they are as thorough as CA, though I think a jerk inspector can give you hell if he's having a bad day and wants to take it out on you.

I did install TBI on my 83. I didn't install any smog stuff at the time, so the EGR is just going to be for looks since I have no wiring to control it anyway. I don't know if the TBI vehicles had air pumps or not. I'm installing a vapor canister, EGR, the closed air cleaner with heat riser, and that's it for now. I'll go through and see what happens. Oh, I also installed a cat. I think I ought to pass the sniffer with flying colors compared to a 1983 carb vehicle, since the thing will be running closed loop EFI with the cat. It's only the visual that concerns me. I'm going to go when it's busy so maybe they won't feel like taking the time to poke around too much.

I have one of those huge plastic totes just jammed with all my emissions garbage from way back - miles of vacuum hose, air pumps and tubes, cannisters, EGR, god knows what all. The thought of bolting all that back onto my truck just makes me want to cry. I really couldn't anyway, unless they made me put the carb back on. I don't have enough places to plug all those tubes into on the TBI.

The inspection stations are government run things, I think there are about 3 in the city. Or am I missing something? For the wife's vehicle, I drove it through and they gave me a piece of paper to take to DMV when registering.

Seriously, if Al Gore can live in a mansion and buy carbon offsets, why can't I buy my way out of this? It's a load of BS really. Send me an IM if you have some info.
