Need to replace one of my Optima 800U batteries, which awesomely survived since 1997. I'm thinking of changing to a Die Hard platinum:

DieHard Platinum Automotive Battery Group Size 34/78DT

I think this is supposed to be the right one, but the dimensions stated on-line are a bit bigger than my current optimas, which consume the entire battery tray. Anyone know for sure if this thing fits? I save $20 buying on-line...

Group 78 is the right size, and stock they are held down at the bottom, so some variation in the manufacturer's measuring inside-vs-out is possible.

I have two of those batteries in my K5. Haven't had them long, so I can't do a review, but they seem to be doing ok.

Buy an Interstate battery and be done with it. As Aaron said group 78 is what belongs in your rig.

Dual batteries should be replaced as a pair so they charge equally. If only one is replaced, the older one most likely has lost capacity causing the new one to not fully charge.

Yeah, it fits. $200 for one battery, hope it's worth it. I guess with a 4 year full replacement warranty I can't go too wrong. I'm not willing to shell out another $200 while the other one is still going strong. Seems like as long as the alternator is making 14 volts they should both be able to charge. In my setup, one of the batteries is cut off from the system when the ignition is off, so the old one can't draw down the new one.

Interstate might be the maker of some Die-Hards for Sears, most batteries sold today are made by one of only a few companies like Interstate,Johnson Controls or Exide, the top 3 manufacturers...so the "name brand" isn't always a determination of quality...there was a thread here recently on who makes batteries for various distributors...

The Interstate battery dealer in my area also sells batteries in plain black cases with no stickers on them for about 40 bucks for most popular sizes ,their "economy" line for used car dealers and cheap guys like me!..I was told they are made on the same assembly line as the higher end batteries, they just have a shorter warranty..might have less plates and CCA's,but are good enough for most daily drivers..

The Die Hard platinums are supposed to be the same inside as Odyssey batteries. Slightly different technology from Optima I believe, but they have no liquid acid and can be mounted sideways, vibration resistant, etc.
