Wanting to confirm that a 4l80e coming out of a 97 Chevy 4x4 Dually diesel will have a stand alone controller from the factory. Also would this be a no brainer to swap in a 86 M1008 with no special computers or wiring other than the stock controller? Thanks!

I think that is controlled by the ECM in that year. You need to look for the '91-'93 4L80E. At least for the diesel...after 93 the diesel was computer controlled so the 4L80E is controlled by the ECM.

correct. if the engine is electronic. the tranny is integrated. renes right on, '97 is about 6 years too new. a mechanical engines with a 4l80e is what you want.

I may be wrong on this but all diesel Van trannies (2wd) were stand alone....HMMWV trannies are also stand alone, you can pick them up from government auctions sometimes...

I think tRusty is right, but I think either 93 or 94 was a split year. I was looking doing the same thing. Defintely a cheaper way to go than using a contoller from Compushift. PCS also make a controller http://www.powertraincontrolsolutions.com/transcontrol.php. I dont know how much they are. I have heard of people make them manual valve bodies. Sounds like a pain removing all the shift solinoids and etc. Another option to consider is a built 700R4 or a 6L90E. The 700 had a bad rap early on but now there are so many after market parts for them and will survive 500 hp fairly easy. With the 6l90E/6L85E there is a contoller in development but I can not remember the company.
