diesel 700r4 help

ok.so i was pulling my trailer with my 83 blazer with a 6.2 diesel and a 700r4 auto tranny. when i was coming up one of the last hills of my trip my third gear and overdrive went out. i still have first second and reverse. so my question to you pros is what to do next.

should i get a rebuilt tranny and just swap it

should i get a rebuild kit and do it myself

should i search ebay and try and find a used one...

Sounds like you burnt up the 3-4 clutch, real common on 700r4s.

I'd recommend getting a trans from Bowtie overdrives, seems like they are in your neck of the woods. They aren't the cheapest but they will a trans that will likely outlast your truck.

It's a big gamble buying trannys from e-bay and not worth the risk IMO.


There are some special tools involved in building a 700r4 correctly and by the time you bought the parts and tools you're going to be in it pretty deep. When you factor in possibly having to do it 2 or 3 times it's just not worth it.
