I had an idea. my mom said she would give me $1000-$1500 if i put it towards an economical vehical.(i am currently using her car to run around town)The problem is i want a truck. Then i thought find a blazer with a diesel engine.the only problem is i dont know anything about diesel engines.someone who knows something school me on blazer diesel engines.

Thanks

your best bet, is do what i did, find a somewhat rough (IE some rust, dents, bad paint yadda yadda) ex military truck, known as a CUCV, youll want the M1009 version. they are very simple, no frills, and easy to work on. i got mine from a farm boy down in charlottesville VA for 1500 bucks. and it was in running shape when i got it... now, ive had to sink money into it, mostly to fix the stuff the farmboy goobered. alot of stuff on this truck hadnt been serviced for a longgggg time.

as of this point ive probly put 5000 into it, but i have put a new starter, new glow plugs, rebuilt both alternators, rebuilt both front hubs and brakes, bought (but have yet to install) the parts for the rear brakes, air cleaners, fuel filters, diesel fuel treatment, oil change, oil fitler, replaced the U-joints (it spat out the rear driveshaft). its broken down a time or two, but its always easy to fix.

i drive it as a daily driver, going to and from work, alot of stop and go, i get around 17 mpg around town, probly 22 or so on the highway. the military trucks came with a three speed TH400 tranny, which is bulletproof, but sucks alot of power from the drivetrain, and gives up some fuel mileage with bad gear spacing, and no overdrive, but the axles are highway friendly with 3.08 gears. not the best around town, especially with big tires, but not bad on the road, i can cruise very comforateably at 55-65mph.

as for off road, with the stock suspension, and 33in goodyear wrangler MT/R's you wont be taking on any serious rock trails, but i hit up the GW national forest, which is alot of trails, water, mud, and a few pretty challenging parts for beginning off roaders, and there wasnt anything there it couldnt handle in 4lo. (except some boulder trails that i didnt have the ground clearance for). and there were only two times when i had to take it out of 4hi to get up and over some steep sections.

i have no regrets buying this truck by any stretch of the imagination. in fact were using it to haul all the camping gear for me and ten of my friends in july. and im taking another friend campin and four wheelin. and still drivin it every day. the only thing i am looking to buy at this point is a new harmonic balancer.

future plans are a 4in lift, 35in tires, 3.73 gears, detroit lockers front and rear, and a turbo. and wish list, would be a built 700R4, and NP203 transfer case.

most people talk about how gutless the 6.2 is but its just fine by my standards for a full size truck, i have no problem accelerating up to highway speeds. i certainly wouldnt drag race anyone in it, but for regular driving i dont think youd be dissapointed. the civilian version would have the 700R4, which would be very nice for the deeper first gear, and overdrive on the highway, and would have far more creature comforts. but would probly cost a bit more.

I agree with the others on mileage. I ahve a 6.2 in my suburban. These trucks are cheap(bought mine with 4" lift and 39.5 Iroks for $2000) and easy to maintain(change the oil and drive). I have 5.13 gears and the afforementioned tires and think I get a over 15 MPG. I worked on HMMWVs for many years and with 37s and 7.20ish gearing we still got around 15 MPG.

They're not hard to work on, it just takes a bit to get your head wrapped around how the diesel works. The fuel system is probably the finickiest thing to work as there are very specific procedures for certain things. The upside is there is no distributor or computer to deal with. Overall, quite simple...just different.

My pick-up gets over 25 mpg on the freeway and almost 18 in town, but it has a 700R-4.

if i find one with a th400 i should swap it out for a 700r4.

i know diesels dont have sparkplugs but glowplugs instead whats the difference?and if you have bad glow plugs how do you change them.

Thanks

The glow plugs spin out similar to how spark plugs do. The glow plugs only are used for starting...once the engine is running they don't do anything.

what would really be cool is a nv4500 swap in a cucv, i bet it could top the 700r4 mileage wise

yah thats what i thought. in a diesel there is no spark need for the fuel to ignite.is that right?

Correct. It relies on compression. Like 20:1. The temp, compression, friction, all work together to ignite the fuel.

ive always wonder this....you know how on a truck with a stick you can "push" start it? well say you ahve a diesel battery is dead and you have a stick...could yuo push start it and drive it like that? just w/o and electrics, er i guess the alt would work....but do yall get what i mean? or do they have electric fuel pumps?

that's correct.

that would be really cool
even a sm465 would be cool

my main concern is reilabilty
what i really dont like in any m1009 or blazer for the years they had diesels is that the truck had 10 bolts front and rear.ive seen way to many broken 10 bolt rear ends

Had some battery problems over the years when I had my little Isuzu. Starter probs too. Only took a little push and a pop of theclutch and Clackity, clackity, clackity it was up and running.

I've got an NV4500 behind the 6.2 in my K5. I hope by fall to have a few other things sorted out so I can get some freeway time in. Right now I don't think it's very suitable for speeds over 40 mph so 5th gear never gets used.

i like the manual tranny behind the 6.2...seems to get more of the available power to the ground (according to my right foot dyno ;) )

i was about to say, trustyk had already done that NV4500 swap.

as for how hard they are to work on, i havent had to get into the trickey stuff like the fuel pump and whatnot, but this is my first diesel, and i havent had any problems, and as my previous post shows, ive done quite a bit of work to it at this point. ive done the glow plug swap, they were easy to test, easy to take out. the replacement glow plugs had bigger blades, but i custom made some pigtail connectors out of spare wire, female connectors, and the blades off the original glow plugs, so that i didnt have to cut up the factory harness.

to be honest, the diesel engine is far simpler than a gasoline engine. and once you wrap your brain around it its actually a great reliable engine to work with.

i still get a real kick out of popping the hood, and having a bunch of guys around, popping off the air cleaner lid and showing them my special "invisible" carburator lol. the looks i get are priceless. everyone thinks that old truck is running a carburated engine. they cant figure out how it runs without one lol.

forgot to mention - that is correct assuming that your engine is already warm. if not, you would need to glow your gp's, and if you can't do that, you won't start.

for a fuel effiecent truck i dont think i am going to go this route.according to my friend(he know alot about buying trucks and diesel)he say for the price range i am looking for he said that they are way to much money around here.

he says i should try to find a old toyota ford ranger or dodge dakota
