Where was the coolant temp sensor wire located on the 6.2 diesel?

My situation.

My '82 K1500 had a 6.2. it now has a 305. I have the original Radiator,temp gauge & wire harness.
I know the temp sensor is supposed to be between #1 & #3 on the SB but I don't know where it would have been on the 6.2.

Sensors are in the same location on the diesel and small block. The only difference between the two is the length of the ignition wire.

Thanks. I would like to get my gauges to work w/o spending a grand on all new aftermarket stuff.

I went the other way and swapped a 6.2L in place of a 350 gasser and the only wiring change was adding more wire to the ignition and adding the diesel specific stuff like glow plugs.

I'm dealing with a PO swap.

So what did you do with the oil pressure unit?
The diesel is 80psi, the gasses 60 psi. I couldn't get that one to work either.

A guage is a guage, so it goes to 80 and you only need it up to 60, it will work fine.
If I had a spare gas guage set I would swap with you.
What year did you say it was?
I might be swaping a diesel in my chalet 77 so I might want the higher pressure guage?:dunno:

I can get gauges & bezels at the junkyard all the time. I thought the 60 psi sending unit wouldn't read correct on a 80 psi gauge so I got a different gauge. Neither one work.

My gas gauge is correct. My clock works. My speedo works but needs to be calibrated for bigger tires.Oil & temp are no good and a tach is nonexistent.

It's an '82...

Oh well, I was talking about just the oil guage, not the whole cluster, as for your problem, it might be the sender.

The fuse may be the best thing to check first. After that, check your wiring for damage. Then start changing out senders.

The tach is a stand alone wiring system if it is a factory tach. Two wires, one to the fuse panel, one to the HEI distributor.

I went & check my parts shelf. The extra gauges are all gone. I had a 60 & an 80 psi oil. I must have tossed them.

You are correct. My temp sending unit is not installed. There is a plug in the location between 1&3 and I have no idea where the sensor wire is.

The 60psi oil pressure sending unit is installed. The 80 psi don't fit on the SB under my dizzy. The sensor wire is there but the gauge don't work. I will investigate.

I'll figure it out one day...Thanks for the replies.

I fixed all the problems.

There was no temp sending unit on my engine, just a pipe plug. I removed the plug, installed the sender and the gauge works fine.

The oil pressure sending unit however was a little more complicated.
The gauge, and dash wiring are all set up to read a Diesel 80psi sending unit. The 305sb engine could only fit a 60 sender. These will not work together.

I tried changing the gauge to a 60psi gauge, to work with the 60psi sender.
This did not work.

I tried to run a new sending unit wire and tap it into the wire just behind the bezel . No luck.

I tried to hook the sender up to the lower location adjacent to the oil filter. I managed to strip the square fitting. again no luck.

Today I went to home depot and got a 2" long threaded fitting, a sleeve, and a 45* fitting and put it all together so the 80psi sender can be installed at the 60psi sender location under the dizzy.
IT WORKED! :woot:
All my gauges work now!
