Cali is a very technical state. Most states allow engine changes as long as it was offered in the same class vehicle of the same manufacturer. Cali may tie your VIN to a gasser and give ya the thumbs down though...

I cant say I'm on the other side of the country but I'm speculating from reading alot of pirate 4x4 talk.

If your aloud and your going to do it then get a 6.5, much more power and just as much of a work horse.

I dont think so

If memory serves me correct you CAN NOT put a diesel in a gasser they are supposedly dirty poluters. Cali is assbackwards. My pops is a smog licsensed tech in Cali since the program began. You can only put what was an option for year modle and make unless your going newer and then you must use all of the newer smogg equipment and then take it to a Ref station to get it tagged with the new smog information. I know as Ive put an 02 5.3 into a newer jeep

You may swap a diesel in place of a gas engine but the engine must be the same year or newer with any related emissions equipment (diesel=none). You will have to go to a referee for the initial inspection at which time they will give you an exemption for emissions testing. DON'T get caught later reinstalling a gasser to replace the diesel (there are random roadside testing in certain areas).

emissions equipment (diesel=none).

do EGR valves count as emissions equipment? alot of guys get rid of the equipped intakes on the 6.2 - but all the civilian models had the EGR intakes... but now that i write this, i'm getting a little confused on my tech (and my acronyms!) :doah:

5.3 dodge or chevy motor? If Chevy I thought you had to stay within the vehicle class and manufacturer?

Egr is electric galvanized rectum. Its alright we all forget some times.

Scott - where have you seen this? What exactly do they do? Just curious, never knew about this. I ran my blazer with a gutted cat for a little while i didn't have money for a new one.

It is legal to convert a Blazer/Jimmy to diesel from gas, just like Scott said, because they did offer it with a diesel as an option in that year. The engine and all associated emissions equipment from that year or later as available on that model must be present and working and it must be taken to a referee station. That means they'll want to see an EGR-equipped 6.2L on there for an '86, cuz that's what was offered that year (or a 6.5L would work cuz they had those later in the IFS Blazers/Tahoes). You'll also have to have the diesel filler neck on the tank.

Once the ref signs off on it, you go through some DMV paperwork to reassign its VIN as diesel. Same VIN, but the DMV changes your registration to show that it uses diesel fuel.

After that you're free from further periodic inspection, as long as you keep it diesel. They HAVE caught people with gassers in diesel VIN trucks, and they'll nail you to the wall. :deal:

Just another note, based on your other post in the garage - it looks like you want an smog exempt vehicle with gobs of power. The 6.2L will get you smog exempt, but will likely disappoint you power wise (you had mentioned 350+ HP).

Sooooo...you'd swap in a 6.2L, get it reffed and switched to diesel with the DMV, then spend an assload more to put in a Cummins or something after its exempt. By know you've got your original chassis, and have spent a huge amount of time, effort, and a bazillion dollars...or you could have just found a pre-75 and put a big block in it for waaaaaay less.

350hp diesel. Jesus who really needs that much horse power. If you want horsepower stick to gas... I mean hell my almost stock LO5 is in the upper 200's with a typical rebuild and rv cam.

Diesel is all about torque. Now if you want 350 ft/lbs of torque then no problem a 6.2 should get ya there easy enough.

I would suggest you drop a turbod 6.5 in for easy of goal numbers though.

I would like to know if a Blazer of our years is considered a truck or an SUV though....

on my registration, my blazer is considered a "utility vehicle"... the "sport" prefix is specific to soccer moms and dudes with no stones... :D

Sacramento area is BIG on roadside testing. Basically it is a machine that is usually set up on freeway onramps and measures exhaust output and it can tell between gas and diesel and the machine has a camara to capture your license plate number and from there the plate number can be referenced to a VIN number and find out if the vehicle is registered as gas or diesel. This is how many people are caught with a gas engine in a smog exempt diesel registered rig.
