I just purchased a secondary beater car (Dodge Dynasty) for $250 and after $50 in calipers I was on the road for $300. It is costing me more for insurance and registration but its still under $1000 TOTAL to get it on the road for 1 year. Gets about 16 mpg and I even pay slightly less than most of you for gas at $1.88/regular now.

personally,I wish they would use trains more, and get those huge trucks off the highway-

-seems like every day one flips over or gets jacknifed and causes a massive trafic jam,not to mention they make travelling more hazardous--they should have their own separate road in the median strip or something--they dont blend well with cars and pickups,I nearly get killed every time I go to merge onto the highway,a semi is barrelling down the highway, and always right at the end of the ramp every time I go to merge.....

Traffic on on ramps is supposed to yield to traffic on the highway. A tractor trailer accident is more memorable than a passenger car`s, but passenger vehicles have MANY more. Most tractor trailer accidents are CAUSED by a passenger vehicle. Class A CDL drivers are the most professional and courteous drivers on the road. You would think driving a K5 compared to a passenger car would give you some respect for how difficult it can be to control 80,000 pounds traveling down the highway.

Not always. You obviously don't get to see the waste-transfer trucks and ISO-container jockeys coming down from northern NJ and NY; they're some of the worst drivers, driving some of the worst-maintained equipment, that I've ever seen. I see it in company drivers AND owner-operators. The Motor Carrier Enforcement units of the NJSP, PSP, and the local township are constantly running spot-checks, and the local paper runs a tally each week about how many drivers are cited, and how many trucks are impounded, due to mechanical problems or being grossly overweight. For example: A few weeks ago there was a transfer truck stopped for agressive driving in the tollbooth queue at the Route 1 bridge into PA from NJ; MCE took a quick look and found the tractor had 2 of 6 brakes operational, and the trailer had 1 of 4 brakes operational. A good portion of these clowns either can't or won't speak English, and seem to have found that CDL in a Cracker Jack box. Stop signs, red lights, turnsignals - all seem to be optional to some of these guys...
Now don't take this the wrong way and assume I'm a trucker-basher, because I'm not. I know plenty of CDL-A drivers who are courteous and professional (my father, my stepbrother, and my cousin are high on that list), and I know there's plenty of companies who won't hire or retain clowns that don't "get it".

Not bashing the truckers--

Its not the truckers I was complaining about-most truck drivers ARE the best on the road as far as safety and courtesy--but some arent too,unfortunately--its the fact there are so MANY trucks on the roads here lately!--its just my luck as I try to merge, there is a row of semi's right at the worst possible spot!--there is about 1-2 semi's for every 5 cars around here,if not more--its gotten worse with all the construction around here, they are hauling gravel out by the truckloads right in front of my house, and many trackhoes being hauled around too..seems like more tractor trailers than cars here lately...just too many of them to see around, they block a lot of vision when your riding near them....

Anywhere you have impatient people speeding in cars and slow moving semi's pulling out into traffic, there is an accident waiting to happen(and many do happen here every day!,and it usally is a rollover, with a load of gravel dumped on the road, traffic halts for miles)--I wont argue most of the fault IS the cars and small trucks trying to "beat" the truck so they wont have to crawl behind it for miles,God forbid they might be ONE minite late for their destination!

I do see some of those "trash trucks" mentioned on our roads too!--and they love to tailgate and exceed the speed limit--one of the guys who drives them I know pretty good--his trash route goes from cape cod,all the way to lawerence MA,almost in NH!!--he has to empty about 25-30 dumpsters on each 9 hour run!--no wonder he holds it floored whenever possible--he admits to going 80mph most of the time when the truck can do it(unloaded,or lightly loaded)..

I read stories of trucks in the paper caught in "stings" the state pilice stop and do roadside inspections--some of the defects they find would curl your hair!--and it is true a lot of the drivers dont speak english around here--they must think it helps them get away with violations,if they cant understand the language..but it doesn't...
