Are the k5's that came with the diesel engins really that good, the engines I mean.

Mwuhahaha. Some folks hate 'em, some folks swear by 'em.
The diesel in the Blazers is the 6.2L. They often get a bad rap 'cuz people confuse them with the Oldsmobile 350 diesel made from a modified gas engine... the Blzaers never got 'em, but a very few pickups did early on (79, 80ish?)
The 6.2 started around '82, and is a decent, light duty powerplant. Horsepower is NOT their strong point (for '87, for instance, it's listed as 130hp, vs the 350's 210hp) but they do okay on torque, especially on the low end (240 ftlbs @ 2000rpm, as opposed to the 350's 300 @ 2800.) Trucks that came with the 6.2 will gerenally be geared differently to account for this. They also get great fuel economy by comparison.
When compared to a big block Chevy, or a Cummins turbo out of a Dodge, the 6.2L is pretty lackluster... but against a stock 350 it'll pull all day, just slower, and burn half as much fuel doing it
The CUCV's all came with them... the pickup versions had 4.56:1 gearing, so while they had no top speed they could pull pretty well, but the Blazer versions (M1009) had 3.08:1 gearing

so they will reach 80+MPH. Eventually. Not going uphill or against the wind
They also require more careful maintenance than a 350; OTOH, change the oil in them regularly and they'll last a long time.
