Good day all

How can i do to remove the carrier Bearings?
I,m triying with a 2 jaws puller but it is impossible, and here doesn,t seem to be enough room for use a bearing separator or splitter
It is a GM 12 bolts carrier

I have seen a tool from yukon for this porpouse, but for that price i could buy a Detroit locker and throw de G80 with the bearings to the junk

Thanks,
Jorge

i would not waste my time with the g80 gov loc as thay blow up. i would get somthing else.

and lots of times i air hammer them off to get the shims and then mic them and use new shims and bearings. its not realy worth the reuse and possible damage .

But the shims in the 12 bolts carrier are between the outer race and the axle case not between the bearing and the carrier...Aren´t they?

I would like to get another locker, but i have spent too much buying the ring& pinion and install kits and i can,t to spend more on the 12 bolts.

I should to have bought a 14 bolts ff instead the 12 bolts and the parts....It was a mistake:(

The old bearings are going in the trash, right?

Cut through the outer "cage" and all the roller bearings will fall out. Then cut a groove in the inner bearing race until its close to the carrier (you may have to use a small cutoff wheel, say 1" wide or so). Then put a sharp chisel in the groove and hit it with a hammer. This will crack the bearing race (bearing material is VERY hard and hence its quite brittle too) and then it will come off easily.

I don,t know what shape they are because i never have run this axle.
I bought it to replace my stock 10 bolts.

Is there some way to determine if they are ok or not?
I,m considering to reuse the old bearings and store the new just in case someday i can get a better locker..

To cut is an option.I think a dremmel tool uses to be very useful for this kind of jobs.
I have read the inner race can also be removed attaching a bearing separator in the race groove and using a press to push the carrier.

As for the condition of the bearings, look out for pitting, chunking, or any lines running up and down the roller bearings.

Basically, if the surface of the bearing race and roller look smooth they are in good shape.

Ok thanks.
Will do.I,m seriously considering to get another diff.

Imagine that i install the stock g80 with the new ratio ring and pinion kit and i notice that it doesn,t work properly ,so i decide to remove it and get another diff such as a truetrac or a locker
Should i remove the pinion again to add or remove shims and get a gear pattern or would i just need to check/adjust the backlash and the carrier preload?

Thanks again

Well, you're asking a couple things here.

What ratio are you using now, and what are you considering changing to?

If you decide to replace your G80 with a full carrier locker and you're not changing gear ratios, its very likely that you won't need to change pinion depth. The backlash should be close but you may need to make small adjustments.

Any time that you are changing gear ratios you will need to make changes in both pinion depth and backlash.

Chris,
I bought the 12 bolts axle out of a parted 79´ jimmy.
It is 3.42 (Thick carrier) with a factory Eaton g80 , wich i don,t know what sahpe it is.
I have bought a 4:11 R&P set from Motive Gear to regear it.

The axle is fully dissassembled now.I still havent mounted the new parts.

If i mount the new 4:11 r&P set with the g80,run it,and i find this diff is not ok ,will i have to remove the pinion to add or remove shims if i install another diff to remplace the bad G80 ?

Thanks again for you invaluable help.

The carrier break for 12 bolts is 3.42/3.73, i.e. you can't use 4.11 gears on a carrier that had 3.42's unless you buy "thick" gears. Make sure that's what you have.

You should not have to change pinion depth if/when you change carriers.

The only shims that you may need to change are the carrier shims (which set backlash), and even then its unlikely that any changes will be necessary.

Thanks Chris, that is a good notice .
I will try with the G80 then.

The 4.11 ring and pinion set i bought are Thick ,but they are for 2.73 ,3.08 and 3.42 carrier .
3.73 and lower would not be the same carrier yet.

Regards.
