So I got to change my gear oil. But I am not sure if I should use the actual gasket or RTV or both so...........

For years now I only use Black RTV to seal my diff covers. I put a rag ontop of the diff then wire wheel the bolt hole surface, then use the rag to make sure no crap got on the diff or in the housing.
clean the cover too
Then I run a small bead on both cover & housing. I let it cure up fer a beer or two(about 15min) then squish it together..done deal.
I try not to put too much on so when it squishes the RTV doens't go everywere.
Good luck /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

One thing I found is that if you hit an object hard enough to dent you cover at the flange, you can get a leak if you only use the gasket. By using RTV (I use grey for eveything), it flexes witht he bend and doesn't leak.

Anyway, just my unsolicited opinion.
