Does anyone know how to tell the difference between the two front ends without pulling the diff cover?

D60's are physically larger, the little "60" that is in the housing next to the cover, four bolts that hold on the the steering arm, KINGPINS, three ubolts, much larger lockouts, and eight lug hubs are all I can think of.

If I recall correctly D60s could be had in a 6-lug at some point. Not sure if that was a GM app though.

steering arm is a good thing to look at, dont think any 1/2 or 3/4 ton axle of any make uses 4 studs in the rectangular orientation like you see on a D60. Could be wrong. Anyway, if you know what a D44 hub looks like, you'll know a D60 when you see it, hubs are significantly larger.

old closed knuckle were big 6 lug. or aftermarket axle spec built could be ordered 6 lug like all others look for those things

I don't think GM ever did but I could be wrong.

Yes they could, but as semifloating rearends, and under IH and Dodge trucks with closed knuckles and a large 6 lug pattern.

easiest way is to look for kingpin caps vs castle nuts.

there was a gay oddball dodge d44 that used 3 u bolts and 2 studs (like a D60), just warning ya.

Anybody got some pics of each?

Also tryin to find out if i got taller gears stuffed in my diffs. It had a lift and steering braces when i bought it and i don't know if i got d44's or d60's. Has chrome diff covers so im wondering if they did anything to it when it got opened up.
