carbed vs tbi. Any idea what the difference could be. I have the 31 gallon tank that was used when it was a 90 with TBI, but now it will be carbed. I bought a sending unit, for I believe an 84, to replace the TBI one. I`m considering buying a new tank, because mine has some surface rust on the bottom, wether or not I should worry about it, I`m not sure.

If I choose to replace it, which should I go for?

The only difference is that the TBI tank has a baffle in it to help keep fuel at the pick-up.

Factory FI tank baffles are weak. If not going FI again, I'd consider getting a carbed tank just for that reason.

Best to just buy a carbed complete tank out of a junked vehicle, although it sounds a bit late. :)

I'm not sure how to post pictures but take a look at the link listed. The factory TBI tanks have a squared off bowl shape that the sending unit submerges into. It acts as the baffle that helps to keep the electric pump submerged in fuel. The only problem I think you would see is if the longer pickup strainer doesn't fit all the way down into the bowl. The TBI units seem to be a little smaller. I'm not talking about the depth, but the length that the strainer lays along the bottom of the tank. If you have both, see if it fits.

dosent it have a fuel pump built in also?

Nope, mechanical pump on the block :wink1:

Sounds good, I`ll just pick up a new tank for a carbed rig, thanks Dorian :wink1:

Yeah, its pretty funny...a used TBI sending unit is usually $50 or so, but you can buy a tank with sending unit for $40 many times. Carbed the same way.

Purchase an adjustable pressure regulator with a guage. Connect the pressure regulator to the tank fuel pump line, connect the regulator port to the carb, connect the fuel bypass to the return line ( to the tank ). Adjust the regulator to 6 lbs. pressure and -voila- the perfect fuel pump.
Replace the tank with the same size, check the straps carefully for rust.

I'm doing the same switch but going in reverse. My question is on the FI tank working with a carbed motor. I want to switch out the fuel tank now to an FI tank and do the actual FI on the motor this spring. Is there any problem using the weak stock fuel pump on the baffled tank until I do the switch?

Truck is a 76 with a 350 and 25 gallon tank. Also, I see Classic Industries has a 25 gallon tank. Does anyone reproduce the 31 gallon tank for fuel injection? If so, is the only difference on install the length of strap?
