Worked out a deal with Manch on the Cummins that he has. I want to run a 4500, an auto isn't gonna hold up, can't find one, and don't have enough money to get one built to hold up. Looking at 4500s, looks like there is a HD just for the Cummins. Is there is a difference, or could I use a GM one, or out of a Dodge gasser??

Is there any other tranny choices out there??

The GM has a different output shaft, spline count, something on the back. That won't work.
I do not remember if the dodge gas is the same, I think that it is not, the diesel is specific, but I don't remember off-hand.

I knew bout the input shafts and such. My buddy has a gas one in his truck, think I can get that for a decent price, but don't want to waste the money if it's not gonna work. I could sell it, but would rather only have to buy one once...

You can use the '95 and newer GM trannys behind the Cummins, all you have to do is find a Cummins bellhousing and input gear. The bell to tranny bolt pattern is the same on '95 up GM and all Dodge NV4500's, and the input gear is simply a matter of unbolting the front cover (4 bolts) pulling the old one out and putting the new one in. You may also need the specific bearing for the new input gear.

Im not sure if N/V ever addressd the problem but Ive have several failed NV4500`s behind Cummind powered trucks. Most common issue was 5th gear as it falls off the shaft due to the factory splined shaft being only half way splined. This causes 5th gear to rock on the shaft and eventually drive the nut off the shaft. There is a full splined shaft avaliable aftermarket or Dodges repair was a upgraded nut and a bucket of locktite, some even welded the nut on. Either way while out of the truck it might be worth pulling the rear end off and doing the upgrade to save loss of 5th later. I left Ddodge long ago and never will look back, but for those who are running NV4500`s I was curious if your sticking to the reccomended Castrol Syntorque lube at $35 to $45 dealer price a quart or from standard transmission in Texas for $50 a gallon. Trans said all warranys were off if you didnt use it.

I'm running the castol stuff, but since the oil change interval is supposed to be 100k miles, I'm not too worried.

GM sells the correct lube for about $25/qt...and yes I do use it. It's a GL-4 lube and it's very necessary because of how the syncho's are built and the material used on them.

The GM version on the NV4500 has a vibration damper between 5th gear and the nut, at least the diesel version does. This makes it about impossible for 5th gear to loosen the nut if it does fret on the shaft a bit. The fretting and loosening of the nut is mostly an issue of towing heavy loads in 5th gear though.

The b!tch is finding a newer 4500 out of a GM, and finding a Cummins bellhousing. Swapping parts shouldn't be a big deal, and doesn't seem to be too unGodly expensive. Might have to wait till taxes come back, maybe then I'll be able to afford something.

Also need to get the motor first, and then figure out what I'm gonna put it in....

I have a GM '97 NV4500 sitting on the floor of my garage out of my '97 3500 crewcab. if you sas something with a ford HPD60.......you can use the monster 1440 borgwarrner tcase I have with it.

ask about it now even :D ...............edited

Not sure what I'm gonna be putting the motor in, but it will have a HP60. Wish I had the money....

When I do my conversions I have my Gm Nv4500 built in a 96 and up case with the dodge input shaft and seal retainer and you don't have to worry about any 5th gear problems , plus you have the 32 spline out put .

Then you use the Dodge bellhousing and the Cummins engine adapter plate , I use South bend clutches 13'' 1.25 Con O and Con OFE.

Use a dodge slave cylinder ,and a Ford Master with my Custom SS clutch line .

Manch still has the 4500 that was behind the motor, IIRC he and his boss were splitting parts off the truck. I can get that for $700. It's a 2wd, but not too concerned, I can always run a divorced case.

If that doesn't fall thru, how much are bells for a Cummins?? I didn't see any on Evilbay. And those clutchs aren't cheap either...

Can tail housings be swapped between 2WD and 4WD 4500s? In other words if I find a 2WD 4500 can I run a married t-case if I swap the tail housing?

Edit: Just saw the other post on this subject. :doah:

Yes , they can be changed from 2wd to 4wd ,some of the 2wd Gm 4500 had a fixed year yoke and are 35 spline .By the time you do a swap shafts and tail housing it's cheaper to get a reman trans .

The bellhousllhousing is different ! You'll need a 94-2001 from a diesel or V10 with the Nv4500
