When installing into a 14FF, what are your opinions of each? I know the DL may be the strongest of the three but whats wrong with the other two, other than prices?

I've installed a LR in a 10 bolt rear once and while it was challenging at first to install, it made sense how it went together. I wouldn't mind running another one but would like to hear the comparison with the PT.

Right now I'm looking at the prices in my Summit Racing catalog just for pricing comparisons. They go like this:

LR - $363.11
PT - $530.00
DL - $459.95

While we all know the DL is the ultimate and bombproof, why is the PT more in cost than the DL? I thought the PT was more along the same lines as the LR.

I believe the difference between the LR and PT is a little bit smoother and quieter pavement operation from the no-slip PT.

If it helps, Richmond Gear recommends the PT in DD situations, saying that the LR is for "vehicles that are primarily driven in severe driving conditions or are used for recreational off-road". I haven't used one but I've heard that the LRs can be noisy on the street.

If you've installed a LR, you know that you're basically replacing the spider gears, whereas with the DL, you're swapping out the carrier.

As you've said, the Detroit is pretty bombproof. A buddy stuffed one into the 12b on his '72 and couldn't be happier. You really can't notice it on the street, but it makes a huge difference off-road.

I'm guessing that if you're running a 14ff, you're serious. In that situation, I'd opt for the Detroit.

The DL in a 14FF is replacing the spiders only, not the carrier. I've done numerous of these swaps before.

I've only done one LR in a 10 bolt rear. Never done a PT yet. I guess I will keep sticking with the LR instead because the price difference isn't enough to justify a little noise.

I'm checking into lockers because I have six 14FF's I want to rebuild, 'blast, paint, assemble and resell back out for a little coin on the side. I'm looking into pricing options for the rebuilds for the customer who wants to choose their choice of locker.

Not exactly the same but I had a PowerTraxs in my '96 Ranger's 8.8" rear. I loved it. Manners were great and it was solid reliable.

That said...having had the Detroit in the 14 bolt under Big Ugly I was perfectly happy with it. Never noticed any real quirks or oddness.

In that situation I'd go DL.

Another one to add to the mix , don't know anything about them , cept they sure do look like a Detroit locker

I noticed that Yukon offers their own named versions of the DL, Trac Lok, and Powr Lok. They've pretty much changed the name but still offer equally strong stuff as I named.
