warning: Noob question...

What are the differences between the cable bracket(s) and carb linkages between the TH350 and TH700r4 equipped vehicles? Need to install and connect kickdown cable for TH350 in a K5 originally equipped with 700r4.

slowly bringing my K5 back from the brink of death. it's an '86 but it has a TH350 instead of the original TH700r4. It was used as a "farm truck" by the previous owner and I guess when he had problems with the 700 he decided to swap in a TH350 instead of rebuilding the 700. Unfortunatley for me, the existing kickdown cable from the TH350 was cut off a few inches above the transmission case so I need to install a new kickdown cable. The carb. is the original Q-jet with the brackets, etc. for the original 700r4.

any suggestions on sources for the correct linkages and brackets?

TIA
Rob

The th700r4 cable snaps onto the stud on the carb , the th350 has a slot with a hole at the end . To use the th350 you pull the cable so the hole is over the stud , push it over and let it go . Both should take the bracket with the square hole with a little notch on one side .

Any later bracket ( mid 70's on ) with the later style throttle cable should work .

Can double check with my 70 Chevelle when I get home ( has a th350 with cable just sitting there ) .

Goin from a TV to a kickdown cable will probably work but it's been sooo long since i've even looked at a bracket for a kickdown cable that i can't remember if the bracket is close to being in the correct position or not. Basically if the cable housing will mount into the bracket (i'm sure it will) and the cable itself is long enough to reach the carb/TBI and does limit full throttle it will work. The kickdown cable doesn't control line pressure like a TV cable for a 700R4 does.

thanks for the replies. if I understand correctly, it sounds like I should be able to purchase an OEM type replacment kickdown cable and simply utilize the existing TV cable bracket and connection stud. that would be great if that's all there is to it. I don't understand why they cut the cable off instead of just hooking it up. I just hope the little hook inside the tranny isn't missing when I attempt to install a new cable. :doah:

I did go check my cable , looks different , but the part where it goes into the bracket is square with a nub . And after a test fit of both a th700 cable and th350 cable , both fit my 83 bracket .

I already know any 72-86 intake has the same holes on it for mounting the bracket ( I had a 700r4 with the 83 bracket and cable on a 72 intake that had a th350 originally )

thanks very much for checking that. I spent some time chasing down a kickdown cable Friday afternoon. kinda frustrating. Both Oreily's and Autozone sell Pioneer brand cables and apparently use the same database of applications and part numbers for the cables. I'm pretty sure the database is incorrect - it shows the TH350 as an option in '84, but the part number they have for a th350 kickdown cable is actually for a 700's TV cable (it has the clip-on end at the carburator instead of the metal slot).

All three websites, Pioneer (cable manufacturer), Oreilly's and Autozone's all have the wrong kickdown cable type shown for TH350 (all the same database). One of the guys at an Oreilly's finally started checking various years, going backwards year by year and finally came up with a kickdown cable for a TH350. I believe it finally popped up for an '80 or '81 (can't remember which one). Unfortunately, that cable doesn't fit correctly at the carburator end. It fit perfectly at the trans. end, but it's too long between the metal slot that slips over the stud and the square clip that snaps into the bracket (make sense?)

With the cable snapped into the bracket and adjusted all the way back it was still actually pushing the throttle open a little - a sure sign it's not the right cable. The way the cable is made makes me think the bracket for an '80 (or whatever this cable was made for) has the square hole farther back toward the firewall.

So...back to square one. Still trying to find the correct kickdown cable.

Use that cable you bought , then go to the parts store and get an adjustable kickdown bracket , it will put it farther back .

Could be the cable for a different application . big blocks , olds diesels , and small blocks have the holes in the intake in different spots .
