What is it with a stock diff cover? (some told ~4.5 pints...) I'm changing my diff oil sometime today and want to make sure I have enough. Lastly, do I really need to put Permatex on the gasket?? I don't think I have any handy.

I don't even use the paper gaskets, just the goo. It works fine. The "Right Stuff" goo is great, but kinda pricey.

It should take about 5 pints (2.5 quarts). Buy three quart bottles and you'll be good to go.

IIRC it takes like 3 quarts give or take a little. Most people just run RTV without a gasket.

my 12 bolt (8 7/8 ring gear) took 1.75 quarts (3.5 pints).

GM service manual states 3.5 pints.

Just posting this because i found mixed info in the search results for fluid capacity.... the smaller 10 bolt actually takes more fluid than the 12 bolt.
