Ok so when I rebuilt my 350 I got a new oil pan. I wasn’t a high volume pan as far as I know. But it’s not the same as the one that was on before I rebuilt it, shaped differently. When filled with the “proper” about of oil it barely touches the bottom of the dipstick. So my thinking is, the length of the dipstick didn’t change meaning the oil still needs to be to the full line on the dipstick to make sure the front of the pan has oil too. So more oil right? Seems stupid I know. but since nothing changed besides the pan, I can’t overfill it by filling it up to the full line right?

I am concerned about the pick up tube. Was the pick up setting checked ? How is the pan different than the original? Deeper ? Wider ? Longer?
Could be a 6-7 quart pan.

Was the engine you rebuilt on the passenger side? also you could measure both pans and see if the depth changed if not 5 quarts is all it needs.
Yeah so it’s the same block, same dipstick. Passenger side. I need to just find the pan online and check the specs but I can’t remember where I ordered it.

I set the pickup depth, no problems there. I primed the engine before firing and it gets oil to the top end just fine. Hard to explain the differences in the pans. I’m going to try to find the one I bought online to make sure it’s 5 quart and also to compare to the old one I had

As long as the pick up is close to bottom of pan, and adding more oil won't get up to crank throws and counter weights. Adding oil is a good thing.
Run cooler, take longer to get dirty.

Yeah here’s the pan I bought. 5qts. I’m just going to do an oil change and see what 5 qts gets me on the dipstick. It should be at 5 now but maybe it sucked up a little filling up the oil passages. 2A0C9CD8-8897-4AF6-A511-6E857F157083.png

So most factory oil pans are only 4 quart, the extra quart hangs out in the oil filter.
This could answer your problem maybe you're a quart low because you've got the 5-quart pan and really your capacity is six now.
I concur. You now have a 6 qt oil system, which is good. Little extra cooling, longer interval between oil changes. And if you really wanted to take it a step further, you could add a 2 qt oil filter. K&N makes one. So does Baldwin.

Ahh, makes perfect sense. Much appreciated.
