So I've had my new GMPP 502 HO crate motor for a year or 2 now and am finally putting everything on it. I've got the correct dipstick, dipstick tube, and little o-ring seal. The question is the short tube coming out of the pan that accepts the dipstick tube opens up pretty wide at the end and it looks like there should be a clip or snap ring or something that holds the dipstick tube in place. Is there?? The GMPP catalog doesn't say anything about one, and if you go to the dealer they don't have drawings/schematics for crate motors???

Sorry for the long winded question. Anyboby have experience or have a part #. Thanks!

Mine was just a press fit, kinda like the dipstick in my 700r4. (or my wife, but no O-ring):haha:

The dipstick tube just fits into the tube on the pan and should have a bracket that bolts to the head near the exhaust manfiold to hold it in place.

On my 454 the dipstick tube is actually two different parts.

The lower section pushes into the oil pan, and there is a tab welded to the tube that bolts to the side of the block. The upper section pushes into the lower section and has a welded on tab that attaches to the exhaust manifold.

Instead of a regular bolt for that exhaust manifold to cylinder head location they use a what looks like a bolt with a smaller diameter stud welded to it.

At least this is how they did it on my '88 engine.

No clue on part numbers, sorry.

My ZZ502 just has the o-ring and the dipstick tube. When installing mine I put oil on the o-ring then put the o-ring on the tube and slid it into the tube on the oil pan. Then I filled the rest of the oil pan tube with RTV to stop it from filling with dirt and mud.

zz502 dipstick

I heard that the Lokar BBC dipstick works well. It's lists for $53.00, and it uses two rubber orings instead of one to eliminate leaks.:thumb:
