I just got a transfer case(208) from the wrecking yard its preety dirty its got a nice lttle layer cake on there. What is the best way to clean it? The junk yard guy said theat gas works good but Im not sure if I should take him up on his advice.
Any input would be great. Thanks!!!:waytogo:

Wire brush cup on a grinder will get the worst off ... though you then gotta clean up the dust all over the garage. :D The cup style is SOO much more effective than the wheel type ... though on irregular surfaces you should wear a good shirt as the dang things spit bristles out and they HURT when embedded in your stomach. :doah:

After that, a degreaser, even dish soap, and a scrub brush. IIRC the aluminum cases have a fairly rough surface, so don't expect it to be shiny and smooth. Also, if you're thinking of painting it, read up on it first -- it's prolly not a good idea, inhibits its ability to radiate heat.

Take a scraper and knock off the big stuff then sit it out in the sun to get warm (first), spray it with oven cleaner and let it sit for 10~15 min . Hose it off with a high pressure nozzle.

Easy Off oven cleaner and a pressure washers. Or a parts washer.

thanks for the input! also do I have to use a gasket for the adaptor or can I just use silicone. because I have been searching online for the gasket and connot come up with any info. or am i searching under the wrong decrption.

Cheapie parts washer and then get a flow through brush for it.

Best way to clean it off

Spray it wil EZ-Off oven cleaner and let it sit for about 10 minutes then spray it off with a high pressure washer (think local car wash with high hot water pressure sprayer). Repeat procedure a second time if needed. :thumb:

Depends on how clean you want it?

I'd wire brush, scrape to get the majority off. And I too like dish soap. Dawn, I use it for everything. Dawn and simple green :waytogo:

I usually soak with purple power(simple green) or oven cleaner then pressure wash. Whats left I hit with a cup brush on a 4.5" grinder.

I use dollar store oven cleaner and a hose, higher pressure works best...be careful with the oven cleaner,it can destroy the aluminum tags with the model numbers if they aren't masked off,and it'll remove any paint from aluminum and may do some harm if left on it too long before rinsing it off...it has lye and caustic soda in it so gloves and eye protection is a good idea too..
