Disassemble factory Dana 60 lockouts?

I'm putting my D60 back together and would like to take apart the factory lockout hub for cleaning. I'm talking about the main part that has the inner connection to the stub and the outer part that goes to the actual hub. I removed the snap ring on the back and removed a plastic bushing, but the inner part still won't separate. Is it possible, or do I need to just spray the heck out of it with brake cleaner instead? If none of this makes sense I can snap a picture...
 
Are these the Spicer (like my avatar) or Warn style?
 
Cant just slosh them put with parts cleaner? I just had mine (i am assuming they are the original ones)off. I didn't take them apart. Should I have? They work, and feel smooth. The orings look cracked and I am gonna replace them withing a week or two.

Mine are full of ancient filthy grease. I thought it would be easier to get it apart than to waste 3 cans of brake cleaner trying to clean it up. I don't have a parts cleaning station or anything fancy.

Hmm. Which o-ring? There were none when I pulled mine apart. Is it for the very end of the hub where it meets the lockout cover?
 
Yeah, there is an o-ring where the lockout meets the hub. There was some oily gack on and around the lockouts and I could see bad cracking in the o-rings.
 
warn hubs if you diss assemble the black or red dial unit 100% you will need to check and tune the position of the ring on the inside that pushes the inner stub gear .

this sets the depth it pushes the gear . and can be a little tricky but not bad once you do the first 1 .

also check the chrome body underthe black / red cap once the center screw is out . this area get heavy corrosion and some i have seen and the body is no good.

also the outer dial black / red when set on the inner part threw the chrome body is a 5 sided hex persay . and this also plays a role in alignment of the depth and lock/unlock of the hub as i stated before.

the inners are real easy and stright forward to play with and clean up/lube.

you dont need a lot of grease. and if cold climate get a grease that fill not be like concrete when cold.

See the second big thing from the right? That's the thing I can't figure out how to get apart. I removed a snap ring but the inner part still feels locked in. Any ideas?
 
OK, just got through taking one of those apart last week.
Get ready for a fight.
On the back side,the side that faces the axle nuts, around the hollow shaft is a ring. Its not a snap ring, the best way to describe it is a spiral ring.

It has an end, that you have to work out of the groove, then it winds around the shaft about 3 times.
After you get it off, it all comes apart from spring tension.

Putting it back together was fun. Its not all that hard, but I had about decided I was going to have to go out and use a vise to hold it all together while I got that darn keeper started.

If you don't get it back on easily, go for some kind of clamp or vise. Don't spend about 30 minutes like I did trying to do it with just my hands.

The one I was taking apart was brand new, never installed. I wanted to know how it went together and worked for future reference.
From the factory, it had a small amount of red grease. NOT heavily packed. That hollow shaft had a bronze bushing right under the keeper ring, and I put a small amount of the excess grease on it when I put it back together.

The grease you see on the hub is the amount that came on it from the factory, so you don't want to put on a lot.
 
Thanks. Mine must be slightly different. I had a fairly normal snap ring, then a plastic bushing thing (no brass). I couldn't figure out what else was holding it in, but this morning I tried tapping it out and it came without much trouble. The quality here is not impressive given that this thing rotates at all times. I'll eventually upgrade, but I just want to get on the road first.

By the way, anyone know where I can get replacement o-rings where the lockout mates to the hub? Stew, do you have a source?
