Got a spare 14SF carrier in the garage with broken gov-lock mechanism. Everything else inside the carrier is good. I plan to keep the current gov-lock in my truck until it becomes unrepairable or ceases to lock when it's supposed to, so it wouldn't hurt to strip the gears/center block out of this spare if I can. Then I can toss the carrier since it's junk, as you can't (easily) remove the broken gov-lock components.
Problem is, with the pinion shaft (the center pin in the carrier) removed, the gears can only rotate so much before the center block hits the governor mechanism on the back and jams them up. The center block has machined "flats" where the pinion gears ride, and I don't see anything that indicates why the block won't just pull straight out. The cam setup is "bottomed out" so it's not pressure from the sides holding it in place either. The gears all rotate fairly freely up until the block hits the gov-lock parts.
I've tried some gentle tapping from the opposite side to see if the block would pop out, but it wouldn't.
I don't believe this "rebuild" is in my manual, as GM had gone to replacing the whole units by that time.
Any experience with this?
