disc brakes on a ff14b...fit inside 15\" rims?

for a ton of reasons (no pun intended!) I planned on using 15" rims after I go 1-ton. 3.5" backspacing and a little grinding on the front (d60)...but what about the ff14b in the rear? Would i need to grind there too if I used a misfit disc brake bracket and the caddy elderado calipers? thanks in advance,

J

Re: disc brakes on a ff14b...fit inside 15\" rims?

I have the same setup, only 4"backspacing, i had to grind quite a bit on the 60 and just a little bit on the rear. I just have the regular chevy calipers though. but it wasn't a lot at all in the rear.

I've test-fit 15's on mine, with Eldorado rear calipers. Clearance was no problem. The front is where things get a bit tight.

The hub on a 14 FF is thicker than a front hub so the rotor sits less into the wheel. I mounted up my 15" wheels w/ 3.5" BS and the welding splater (on the inside of the rim) rubbs on the casting flash (on the caliper)...a very small ammount of grinding will be needed.

awesome deal guys, thanks for the info. I like the idea of smaller wheels...lighter/cheaper and when I go 1-ton, I *wont* have to get new tires....so I can get it done sooner. Anyway, thanks again,

Re: disc brakes on a ff14b...fit inside 15\" rims?

I've got misfit's brackets 3.5" backspacing. No grinding required. The front, on the other hand will take all day to clearance.

Thank you......Detroit!

Re: disc brakes on a ff14b...fit inside 15\" rims?

yeah, i know. grinding isnt cool. Then again, once its done...its done! 15" rims are cool...hit rocks a little less often, lighter, cheaper and hella tire sizes are available for them. Doesnt get much better than that. BTW, 3.5" backspacing? what brand/type of wheels are you running? I was thinking about the rock crawler ones they sell at 4wp...but if 3.5" isn't the standard backspacing it usually costs more to get the exact b.s. that you want...lame.
at any rate, if peeps with 4-4.5" bs can fit 15" rims on a D60...surely 3.5" shouldnt be tooooo much of a problem. ;)

Re: disc brakes on a ff14b...fit inside 15\" rims?

I don't have rear disc yet but on my 60 if I had to do it over again I would have went with 3 1/2 backspacing instead of 4 1/8". I was tring to keep as much of the tire under the body as possible for inspection reasons but after everything was said and done that 5/8" difference would not have been that big of a deal. The big part would have been a lot less grinding on the calipers.

Don't forget that less backspace also means more clearance issues when turning. If you got room, no big deal. But, if you are really close or already scuff at full stuff when turned, it may make a difference. That (and reducing scuff radius) is exactly the reason I went with 4" back space.

clearance with respect too which part of the fender? As your backspacing gets smaller...what parts are likely to rub?

Re: disc brakes on a ff14b...fit inside 15\" rims?

The less the amount of backspacing, the more the wheel and tire stick out of the wheel well. The clearance issue, you may rub the lower part of the fender front and rear when turning. When you get twisted up, you could rub the whole wheel opening or inner fender.

Re: disc brakes on a ff14b...fit inside 15\" rims?

Think about the location of the knuckle pivot (king pin or ball joint). Now consider that the tire is outboard of that pivot. When the tires turn, they swing forward and back in an arc. For the same degree of turn, a wheel with less back spacing will move more fore and aft due to the larger radius. If the tire is close to hitting (or already scuffs but is ok) then moving the tire out further from the pivot point will increase the interference.

This is also related to "scuff radius". Again, picture the relationship of the tire and pivot points. When you attempt to "turn" the tire and it is not rolling, then the tire literally has to be drug (scuffed) along an arc. For a given degree of turn, the distance the tire must slide increases with reduced backspacing (more distance from the pivot point).

oh ok, I can visualize it now. cool. Shouldnt be toooo much of a problem for me...I am juuuust about ready to do some serious fender trimming anyway. Imagine about halfway between Steve Fox and pccorsmit (sp?). ;) I see how it could become a problem with some big old 39.5s tho....

Re: disc brakes on a ff14b...fit inside 15\" rims?

What would stock rims have for backspacing? I will have plenty of room so I'm more concerned with keeping the front wheels more aligned with the back ones. Is having 4 inches of backspacing noticable (do the front tires look closer together than the back ones)?

Re: disc brakes on a ff14b...fit inside 15\" rims?

Hoss, the rear is 3" narrower then the front to begin with. So if you have 4" backspacing in the front and back the back will still be 3" less.

Re: disc brakes on a ff14b...fit inside 15\" rims?

looks like hoss has a sub. I thought only the blazers were 3" narrower in the rear. At least when i installed my 86 sub 14bff into my blazer my front and rear are now the same.

Is that not the reason a sawzall was created for.

I was rubbing both front and back of the fender when turning on flat ground with 35x14.50's so I had to trim no matter what. Now that 38's are in the plans I am adding 3/4" lift up front and moving the axle forward 1" and then do the full hack treatment.

Re: disc brakes on a ff14b...fit inside 15\" rims?

Nope, only van rears are wider unless you get into dual wheel axles. Even on my 1 ton axles the rear is narrower.

Re: disc brakes on a ff14b...fit inside 15

I pulled a 14bff out of a 86 sub and it is 3" wider than my 10 bolt was in my 89 blazer. I know for a fact that the 86 sub was original also so what gives then?

Re: disc brakes on a ff14b...fit inside 15

Not sure on that one. I am comparing matched sets like 1/2 ton 10 bolts front and back the back is narrower, same with 1 tons. The 14ff is might be wider then the 10 bolt rear but with 8 lug hubs on the 10 bolt front it should be narrower then the front. Also if it was a 2wd Burb maybe the axle length is different. Maybe somebody will chime in that knows all the wms to wms measurements to help out.
