I would love to have both, but I'm really trying to some a few pennies here and there where I can so I can finish up my build up on my '72 Blazer in the next month or two. Much of my money is going to my 'cage and tranny. But I'm still having to purchase the little things where I DON'T want to make cut backs; like my fire extinguisher, winching kit, d-shafts, etc.

So here's my dilemma, I have two choices:

1. Convert my DRW . HD 70 rear to disc brakes and run a hydroboost set up. This would run me about $290 with the DIY4X kit and other brake parts I'd need.

2. Rebuild the drum brakes and run a HAD t-case e-brake. This would cost me the price of parts to rebuild the drums, + the e-brake which is 269 + the required flange 109.

I would really like the disc brakes because with a 108:1 lo lo, braking in downhill descents are going to be a PITA and too scary for the family riding with me. This is why I'd like the extra stopping power of the rear discs.

I also don't know how much I'd actually use the t-case e-brake since I don't plan to park it on a hill frequently...I won't mind taking the time to find a flat spot to park it in.

So let me know what you think. Vote or Post up your opinion.

Yep do the disks, you will use them everytime you push the pedal and like it everytime also.

Ebrake is infrequent. I have rear disk and still need to do something about the ebrake. No hurry

thanks to everyone. i guess i had already decided in my head what i wanted, but just wanted to see what everyone else thought. the link seems to provide more input towards the disc brakes & even make it seem that the e-brake would be useless in a downhill accident like the one with the Blazer rolling down the face of Lion's Back. thanks again.

So why not do the rear disc WITH an e-brake? Only change is getting the caddy calipers instead of front calipers.

yea but i don't want it to work as a limiting strap as well. i had thought about doing that, but don't want to worry about it stretching or getting damaged. that's why i was considering the t-case e-brake.
There should be no reason why the cables would work as a limiting strap since they will follow the arc of the front of the spring. I've had no problems with mine so far. I've had rear disc with e-brake for several years now.

Yeah...I have had them for awhile also and havent had any probs except the caddy calipers not adjusting correctly. I currently dont have a functioning ebrake...think I need to swap the calipers....did work great for awhile though.
4x4...what year where your calipers? They have a completely different ebrake spring/lever setup than mine.

I'm running Hydroboost and a rear disc set up using front GM calipers no e-brake (didn't want cables hanging down & all the negative feedback I've heard about the operation of the caddy calipers), but I installed a Hurst roll control ($110) for the rear brakes to use as a parking brake if needed , so far I have no complaints.
Just returned from vacation ,used the Jimmy every day (he he he)
to put my boat in & out of the water ,it's an 89 Thompson 19' I/O & I had no issues usung the roll control as a parking brake, held the Jimmy & the boat on a very steep incline (boat ramp) with no problem.
Just my .02

I also have the ebrake with caddy calipers and the stocker ebrake cables come out about where the front spring hanger does so I don't see how it would be close to working as a limiting strap. My stiff springs are the limiting strap for me.

You're joking, right? Your e-brake would stop the back two wheels, if working and properly adjusted, and create drag or stop the front through the drivetrain if you were locked in. Either one or both front wheels would have a braking affect depending on the presence of a front locker. The front would only help if the transfer case and hubs were locked.

The video was an example of what could happen if you panic and don't remember to use an e-brake or if it was not working when your regular brakes fail.

While I agree an e-brake would be not very useful if you were moving at any kind of speed on a hill like that, any extra brake mechanism is better than nothing.

Even on a smaller climb (baby lyons back) than Lyons back, my truck was able to slide down the hill in short bursts with all four tires locked up. I would not be happy to find out what would have happened if I'd had any momentum going and tried to lock up the parking brake. It's simply so steep that a parking brake would be very little help on something like that if you had any momentum going. I guess that's why I only use it as a parking brake even though some call it an emergency brake.

Or if just the rear brakes locked. Imagine the ends swapping on that. Once the momentum starts, hang on for the ride, nothings gonna stop you.

Here's a couple links. Advanced price matched with Summit & didn't charge for shipping :D
Also don't waste your time or $$$ on the install kit , I installed mine where the factory union is, on the pass side frame rail , just needed a couple adapters from 1/4" brake line to 1/8" NPT & a short piece of 1/4" brake line(4" I think . Also I used a toggle switch instead of the momentary switch that came with the roll control.
I can take some pics of the install if ya need some , LMK.

Go disc AND e-brake. There are plenty of e-brake solutions for 4-wheel discs:
-Caddy calipers
-Pinion brake
-Electric Line Lock
-Mico Lever Lock

.....

I call bullsh1t on these two statements. Because there is never a small grade or slant where your truck could pop out of park and bang up that CLS63 Benz. Or after two weeks of trying to find flat places to park it really becomes a pain in the a$$ and you start taking chances. Trail only or DD, I believe you are irresponsible and a fool to not have some type of parking brake.:deal: :screwy:
