As someone who has mounted or helped mount a lot of winches, the single most important part is to make sure the winch stays on the truck.
All my mounts were functional, not pretty. In those days, winches were fairly uncommon, and anybody who had one wanted people to see it.
However, the absolute best hidden mount I ever saw was the first winch I ever saw mounted on a truck.
It was a massive 12K PTO winch mounted on a new '67 or so Chevy 1/2 ton pickup.
There was no such thing as overload front springs or aftermarket anything back then, and it completely crushed the front springs.
The front bumper would actually pick up sand and toss it on the hood when driving down dirt roads and hitting bumps.
Completely undriveable.
So, they took the winch off the front, mounted in the bed right behind the cab with lots of bracing under the bed.
Ran the cable straight down through the bed, to a massive pulley block, then front to a fairlead mounted on the bumper.
Had a couple of covered pulleys along the way to keep the cable from going bad places with slack.
I'm sure they had some bracing behind the bumper, because I never saw any buckling with side pulls.
But all you could see was the fairlead with a hook hanging out in front. They build a wooden box to put over the winch, and us kids used to ride on it and look out over the top when we were driving through the woods.
