disk brake backing plate

yea, i guess, the thin metal plate that goes around the inboard side of the disk

the drivers side mount on the mini is cracked and it rattling like crazy, i figure there must be some reason they are installed, the OE's could save money by not putting them on, so there must be some reason for them
just trying to find out what that reason is before i take it off.

the blazer dosent have them, and my old mini diddent have them and i ever noticed any problems, but just wondering what the actual function is for them

Just remove them and call it done.

Depending on how they are designed, are they by chance acting to duct air over the rotors? Some new vehicles seem to have really thin rotors.

mini rotors are really thin, but the dust plate or backing plate is just like any other plate
