distributer leaking oil

With the compression test, am I looking for an oddball cylinder or low pressure in several of them?

I think my pinging is now gone so i'll be ok with whatever repair is needed as long as I don't have to pull the whole motor.

You are looking for a cylinder with some really low reading. If you do find one then you need to do a leak down test to determine if it is a piston/ring problem.

Ok, got some results. I didn't warm up the engine before doing this, but I did turn the engine over a few times to splash the oil around before taking any readings.

8=145, 7=147
6=140, 5=139
4=136, 3=140
2=148, 1=143

One thing I did find is that the rubber spark plug boot on the #5 and #6 cylinders was brittle and fell apart when I removed them. They are right next to the ram horn manifold center drop.

Nothing wrong with those numbers.

What wires are you running? I run MSD wires and they have a 1200* boot which is VERY HARD to melt with exhasut heat. You might want to try a set.

Jegs. I already got a replacement set of better quality.

We'll that's doesn't help locate the problem, but it's good to know. :)

I guess it's possible the seals were already leaking when the PCV valve was going bad and the distributor was relieving some of the pressure. Perhaps I just need to change them and see where I'm at.

Is there any other possible cause of crankcase pressure I can look into?
Are the fancy rubber valve cover gaskets any good?

There are no fancy rubber valve cover gaskets for perimeter bolt valve covers that i'm aware of. The center bolt covers have a very nice rubber gasket and just the design of the center bolts are FAR SUPERIOR to perimeter bolt.

Alright, after replacing the most leaky valve cover gasket, the leak is back at the distributor.

I've been reading up on this and one option is to run a vaccum pump to maintain the PCV suction at higher rpm's. Anyone ever run any such thing? I still think there's probably something else going on, but am curious if the vacuum actually works.

One other option I could try would be removing the PCV valve and just running open air breathers on each cover? Is that as bad of an idea as it sounds?

That will make the problem worse. Where is the PCV connected to? It should be hooked to the large nipple on the front of the TBI unit.
