i would search for this question but i am on limitied time so i apologize

my question is that of a 1988 k5 blazer. the car runs great except for a couple of times each month the distributer will give me problems. my question is would it be smart to just replace the corroded distributer cap, replace the cap and components, or just replace the entire distributer. this is a newbie question so if my intelligence is completely off i apologize for that as well.

thanks

im thinking the rotor is overheating and causing the vehicle to die...i heard from someone that 88 was the year the distributors were problematic

correct me if i am wrong please....

Never heard of a rotor overheating, It is a passive component. Think of it like a piece of wire, one that happens to spin.

The pick-up coil can be problematic as can the ignition module

thanks ready mix for your help and for not flaming my newbie self.....

i looked at the cap and the rotor for the distributor, they both had amounts of corrosion on them so i went ahead and bought new ones of those. the guy at napa, like you, suggested the coil could be a problem as well and said to look at it in pitch black and start it, if the coil has light then it needs to be replaced. i didnt get to check it out last nite, but i will tonite.

thank you or again, correct me if im wrong.

:angry1: :angry1: flame flame flame.....

Napa guy pretty much said it. Then again coils really aren't that expensive either. I think the cap and rotor will probably fix your problem :)

There's a reman distributor with pickup coil and module for less than $100. Mine would not start and random times and I found it to be the module every time. Finally, I replaced the pickup coil and the problem hasn't returned in 2 years.

That is good info.
Thanks.
I recently used my "trail spare" dist for my Blazer to fix my burban. When I wheel, I keep an entire ignition system with me in a sealed bucket( dist, cap, rotor, wires, module, coil) Modules go bad, often, especially if it is an Atuozone or like place. IMO the coil and module should be replaced at the same time. Keep the good old part for a spare.

I agree with replacing your distributor with a remanufactured one. It sounds like your pickup coil is going bad. Beings you say you are not mechanical but learning. It will be easier to pull your old dist and put in a new one rather than rebuild your old one your self. Do the job right and Get new plug wires, cap and rotor also,. It would be wise to have someone around who has pulled and installed a distributor before to help you get it in right it right so your timing is correct, and you dont install 180 degrees off timing. Your vehicle wont run unless it is installed correctly.

i already had the cap and rotor for the distributor and i replaced it today. i took off the intake, unbolted the cap, found the rotor was gone to crap. slid the rotor in, put a new cap on, then put the wires in the exact same spot as the older rotor and finished. it fired right up and hasnt even thought about dying yet (crosses fingers)
