Distributor leaking oil?

Ok I have been chasing a small oil leak for a while now. Is the distributor a common place to leak oil? It to me appears as if the oil comes out the base of the distributor gasket and then speads down the back side of the motor which makes it really difficult to track down since once it hits the back of the motor it goes everywhere.

I have a new distributor gasket that I can replace it with but I'm wondering how hard it is to seal up. I wouldn't think there would be much pressure back there but it seems to be getting out. I do have a high pressure oil pump which probably makes things worse.

It's probably the rear intake end seal. I ALWAYS throw away the rubber end pieces and use a 3/8" bead of RTV. Changing the distributor gasket is definately alot easier than doing the intake gasket so I would start with that if that's where you think it's coming from.

as Scott mentioned, I've seen hundreds of rear intake leaks, but have NEVER seen one leak from the dizzy gasket...

I used to have a huge leak from inside my aftermarket MSD distributor. Once I changed back to a stock AC Delco, no more leak.

Ya I'm starting to think its coming from there also. I can see the front intake seal leaking a small amount of oil. I didn't use the rubber pieces. This is a vortec motor so I believe just RTV comes with the gasket kits. I sealed both with plenty of RTV. But I think it's probably leaking. I intend to swap out all the brackets on this motor for the vortec style brackets probably this summer sometime. So Maybe I will yank the intake manifold at the same time. Just one thing after another on this dang motor really is starting to be frustrating.

What do you think about using those rubber seals with some RTV also. I'm thinking with the rubber pieces there will at least be something for the intake manifold to compress.

he!! no.. that's a super common mistake a lot of guys make... don't EVER put RTV anywhere near a rubber gaskets, it makes the rubber slip.....

just a nice big fat 3/8 bead of some good black RTV.. make sure you ride up the corners a bit... if it doesn't ooze out a bit, it wasn't enough....
