I am looking to replace my OEM vacuum advance distributor with an MSD 85551(from Summit) mechanical advance. I was wondering if anyone has done this before, and had any positive or negative feedback, and other parts that may be required(besides a coil). I was also wondering if hooking it up electrically will be a nightmare or easy. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ain't nothing wrong with the HEI to be honest, a Blazer isn't a race car. If you want MSD then just swap the stock coil for the MSD and get a 6 series box. They have a wiring kit that just plugs right in. The only creative thing you have to do is find 12v for the box.

Thank you for your input. I agree about the HEI, I've just had too many ignition problems lately, and I just want to keep things as simple as possible. I have to look at the MSD coil upgrade and maybe a 6 box. Thanks.

Thats what I plan on doing. (Minus the distributor) You can either get a new coil from MSD and drop it in the stock HEI location or get a MSD kit that comes with a external coil, a coil cove for the HEI cap and a new coil wire. Then throw in a MSD 6A box and you're all set.

Summit sells it, the Part number is MSD-8400 runs around $190.

"Keeping it simple" IMO, does not entail adding additional wiring or components that can fail and leave you stranded. Stock HEI, no work, will take you to 100K plus, and has gone much longer, on many peoples vehicles. I'm not saying its for everyone, but replacing everything internally in an HEI distributor that can wear out or fail, with new, leaves you with a very proven distributor setup.

Why insist on counting when the ring gear has the tooth counts stamped in?
