I baught a 1980 Chevy k-30 a while back. Its been a long time project. It has a sm456 transmission with a np205 transfercase. A few weeks ago i found a np203 and did some research on the doubler set up. I was told that its difficult to find addapters to mate the np203 to the sm465. Is this true? And if so is it possible to take a 2wd sm465 and make a divorced doubler?

I don't think the 203 was ever available as a divorce mount....but I could be wrong....

you could take 2 divorce mount 205's and put them behind a 2 wheel drive 465.... but man that would be very long.....

or get a 465/205 and a divorce mounted 205 behind it....

or just get a 465/203 (if they ever came that way) and a doubler kit...

or just get an auto/203 and doubler...the easy way out.. :waytogo:

or are you talking about using the 2WD 465 as a range box ???

the 465 did come with a 203 for one year only, check out the for sale section i know there is an adapter for sale in there:D

Thanks guys. I did not realise there was a whole other place on here of stuff for sale. I just found the addapter i need on here for sale. So i guess thats the best way to go. Hopefully everything goes smoothly.:woot:

Cut and paste from our site, how to get a 465 mated to a 203 for a doubler setup:

GM SM465 4 speed Manual Transmission:
If you have an SM465 transmission there are 3 ways to mate it to the NP203.

1: Use a factory configuration. GM mated the NP203 to the SM465 in 1973-1975 using the 10 spline output in the 465, a 10 spline female input in the NP203 and a 4.25" adapter housing between the two. This configuration was used in a wide range of GM trucks but is somewhat rare. Problems are the 10 spline connection tends to wear in the long term and it's difficult to find. Positives would be the short length and the ability to use the common 10 spline output in the transmission.

2: Use a SM465 that was originally mated to an NP208 transfer case. This 465 will have a 32 spline output shaft with a 8 3/8" adapter housing. You'll use a NP203 gearbox with a 32 spline input gear and the face of the 203 drilled and tapped with the GM round bolt pattern to match up to the factory 208 adapter housing. This works very well if you have the available length in the vehicle since the parts are commonly available and the 32 spline connection is very strong and durable, we have brand new adapter housings.

3. Use the factory SM465 to NP203 adapter housing or a brand new adapter housing that we can provide with ORD's new 32 spline SM465 output shaft and a 32 spline input gear in the NP203 (click here). This allows the shortest overall length with the highest strength, most durable spline connection.

Divorced 203's did come behind some Fords, they are just as rare as 465/203 combos.

Yep, I had a '77 Highboy once and it had the divorced, or remote, 203 t-case. Thought it was pretty cool since no one had ever seen one before. And yes, it was HUGE.

not that rare in the northwest. see them on craigslist pretty cheap alot more often than a 203 from a 465.

anyone have a picture of this divorced 203 beast ??

I've never seen one before....:dunno:

It looks like a regular 203...

but driver's side drop and with yoke on the front instead of a splined input :D

Also, I was mistaked, it's the married Ford 203's that we don't see much.

could make for an interesting doubler set up for a bunch of transmission / engine combinations....

I know it adds length...but sometimes it way easier to find deals on 2wd stuff...and not have to deal with adapter plates etc...

Here is a pic of the ford input in a gm203. I got all the info on how to do this from ord

and i used the adapter on it for extra mounting support

Is that an open bearing I see behind the yoke ??

or is the input shaft sealed to the case and the yoke is just sticking thru the adapter ???

EDIT: never mind....I figured it out.... Is that a t-350 plate bolted to the front of the range box ?

he said its a reg gm203 married tcase with the divorced input swaped in. and 203 units had there own bolt on aluminum seal housing. so its good to go like that. and yes th350 adaptor bolted to it.
