DIY bed liner?

Is there a DIY bed liner that can be applied with a brush/roller that I can use on the bare metal bed of my K5? I don't need any expensive spray on liner or insert liner. I just need something to protect my metal from water/mud (specifically because I wheel with the top off and my carpet is already long gone). What can I use besides POR15 and where can I purchase it?

Also, what can I do about keeping my back seat dry? Is there a cover I can buy for it or is there a vinyl seat from another application that will work in place of the rear bench?

thanks.

Auto Zone had one kit for $20, I believe that it was a gallon. Not sure how much it would coat.

I used Herculiner on mine. Bought a cheapo undercoating gun ($20.00) and sprayed it on. Prep work is the key to having any liner system work. Do the prep work right and it will last, cut corners and you end up w/ crap. Got pics if you like.

I too would like a bit more info on this...I would prefer to spray my whole rig with herc, didn't know it could be done.

Yes, I sprayed it. The main problem was filling the spray cup. Also in order to spray Herculiner you need to get little Xylene. Not to thin it cause I shot it straight from the gallon can but to soak the gun between coats so it doesn't cure in the gun. It was easy and I think the results were exellent. Xylene can be found at Home Depot in the paint/thinner section.

Here's a few shots befroe after style. I also rolled the Herculiner on the Fiberglass top. It has faded a bit but still looks better than it did and tree branch scratches are not an issue anymore.

Hey oldassjeep, sweet job with the herculiner. Just wondering where did you get the spray gun, and is there a certain type to use? Thanks.

It was an undercoating gun. Don't remember the brand name. Cost like $20.00. It had about a one quart can that screwed to the bottom of the gun.The spray nozzle was just a tube that stuck off the from. Connected it with the supplied nipple to the air hose and started spraying. I bought mine at a automotive paint supple company called Johnson Paint in South Houston. This picture is simular 'cept mine have a steel container. Guess it wouldn't matter if you are just throwing it away afterwards.

I found the picute at: http://www.automotivefavorites.com/rust-treatment/-p4.htm

They got one for $14.99. after shipping would be close to what I spent. Also you will need a plastic funnel and another set of hands. I also wore a tyvex suit to prevent it getting on my skin and clothes. Atleast get some gloves, wear old longsleeves and jeans.

Gabe, it guess it hasn't really faded, but the shine is gone. There is a UV protectant/color revitalizer that is available also.

I would like to know where you got your spray gun from I am up to that step in my build and don't want to roll the whole truck would be a help if you could tell me where to get the gun from. Thanks

the herc'd parts of my k5 that are in the sun are very very flat black. I actually like it a lot more than the bling bling shiny look that it has just after is dries. Not sure if I'd pay $ for the UV/revitalizer stuff... in my experience, herc takes regular rattle can paint relatively well... just zap it with some gloss black if you want the bling.
