For the new 79 K5 I got I would like to do a bedliner to replace the rubber mat that is currently in it. Is Herculiner supposed to be the best DIY bedliner. And for those of you that have done the Herc how does it hold up to wear and exposure to sun when the top is off? I don't really want a real rough surface and from what I have read that is what the Herc gives. Can it be sprayed or is it roll on only. What about other brands? I was also thinking of following mini mull's build and have some sound deadener under the bedliner if that matters. Self stick sounddeadener with sprayed on deadener on top, then the bedliner.

I did my rocker panels with durabak they offer a textured and un textured formula, as well as uv resistant formula. Great stuff :waytogo: it can be rolled on or sprayed. I've seen herculiner fade time and time again.

Herc can be rolled or sprayed but they say that rolling it on provides a better texture. I've done the Herc, and I'm very happy with it, but I haven't tested it in the sun yet. I heard people say it fades really bad with the top off for long periods of time in the sun. I'll probably never know because I rarely take mine off.

If you've got a sprayer and hopper and wanna spend the extra coin, look into Speedliner. I think that's got the best texture and durability that I've seen in any bedliner (DIY anyway).

It's not quite as rough and gritty as Herc, it's more of a chunky rubbery texture.

Well I don't know what went through my mind, I just looked at my LMC catalogue and saw they have the rubber floor mat kits for about $300 and that would be perfect for what I am wanting.

Well, $300 for 1/8 thick mats is insane and they'll tear once you start dragging heavy stuff on it. Do it right and save $$ for a peace of mind with the roll on bedliner stuff.

Good point, I guess it would be much easier to patch the bedliner if anything ever happened to it. I just worry about it adhearing to the sound dampener stuff.

If it were my truck, I'd apply it over the sound dampener material and be done with it. I mean, it's not like I'll ever take it off in the future.

Maybe somebody else will chime in on bedliners over sound dampening material, I don't know the pros and cons of this.

Not worried about taking it off in the future, just worried it wont stick, cause I was under the impression it would only adhear to bare metal.

Sprayed my cab right before I did the cab swap and it came out great. Although the color isnt gun metal grey like it was suppose to be, I am still pretty satisfied with it. The gun they sent me sucks though, I got a nice undercoating gun that you can break down and clean at carquest paint supply for like 20 bucks.

First Herc is NOT the best but it's a cheap alternative.

Second it does need to be applied to metal. It won't work over sound dampening material. I don't believe any bedliner will.

usually bedliner when applied is 1/8" thick, if not thicker, so I would imagine that would dampen sound quite a bit by itself.

Which brand is that?

Herculiner is great stuff, but I lined the whole tub of my CJ with it and it did fade. It is extremely durable though. I have not been nice to it and other than the fading, it's in top shape after 5 yr's. You do not have to be over bare metal, but you do have to scuff everything it touches with a Scotch- Brite pad. As far as sound deadening material,I do not think it will adhere to it. Herculiner does a good job of sound deadening itself.

rattleguard, its a company out of Houston, so it was local for me.

stuff is tough as nails too, I have a few specs of overspray on a pair of shorts of mine...well its been a year almost with frequent washings with the hot/cold rinse cycle, and nothing. I still try to pick at the specs sometimes in class and they still wont peel up or crack off.
