DIY swing out tire carrier advice?

WassUp! I have sheared a 1" Spindle w/2"1/4 bearing sleeve :saweet:
One year @ Pismo (been too many years to remember which (20+ years every Turkey Week) but I think 2012 ish ) my janky Eye bolt latch vibrated lose on one of many hill climbs! I never saw it let go :yikes: I was like HEY were is my dune flag (mounted to my spare tire gate) HOLY **** my whole gate is GONE!! Luckyly I ran into some folks I knew on the dunes riding quads ..... they found my gate w/36" Irok Swamper Spare H1 at the bottom on a hill climb!!
So whatever you build make sure the damn latch cannot vibrate loose!!:saweet:

Correct. They are crap unless you can keep them free from vibration.

2 years of use with my D44 spindle/bearing setup without an issue. But you are right about keeping the vibration at bay. My latch setup pulls the arm down to the bumper so that the weight is carried at both points and not just on the hinge/spindle.

Part of the reason I think mine is working so well is that the spindle goes through the bumper and is supported on the bottom as well as where it is welded on the top side. Some of the trailer spindles don't have enough material to allow this to happen so all the weight is carried on one weld joint where the spindle is mated to the topside of the bumper.

Doesn’t matter if it’s welded below and on top. It needs to be supported above and below where the tire swings or else all the tiny vibrations fatigue the metal and it breaks. Double shear minimizes this. Push on the tire, if it moves at all then imagine all the times it vibrates going down the road.

As did mine, which also worked fine for years before it broke off. It might last longer if the spindle fit into a sleeve such that a weld at the top of the spindle isn't required - since that's where the cracking starts. I'm sure it varies a lot with weight of the spare and vehicle usage.

EDIT: the one that broke was a trailer spindle. My 10B spindle is still working fine.

I ordered this one but now I'm getting skeptical on its strength. Last thing i want is the entire system going through someones winshield behind me. Seems that if you set it up right it wont be a problem. Maybe make a fail safe latch on latch side if the bumper so it it does fail it dosent come clean off. I have not yet installed it either.

as far as this kit is concerned i haven't heard of it failing and it has good reviews. Ruffstuff isn't known for making garbage.

Quad-shear is good, but this is tied entirely to the body, not the bumper/frame as we've been discussing. For many applications, not being able to close off the back of the truck is an entirely different category.

In those pic you are correct I later tied the tiregate to the cage as did @K30Blazer , which is where I got the idea from , yes right maybe a different category but still cool looking and like to share when I can lol .B99FB069-1410-4EEB-9B7A-FFA8DE3CFB09.jpeg

That looks great man! Nice work. You have to slug and sleeve yours too? Mine was too narrow at first
