I'm having a shop wrap up some of the blazer "to-dos" while I continue with work. Today I got a call that the bolts that came supplied with the guard are too short.

The bolts are 7/16" x 1.5" x 14
He's requesting 1.75" long bolts.

Is he doing something wrong or was this a mistake some years ago when I first bought the gaurdsman? I'd call Kert but they are closed and I'd like to get this taken care of in case I need to find longer bolts when I visit the shop Thursday.

(ps) It's getting stuff done slowly, mainly when there's nothing for his employees to do. Keeps my bill cheap :waytogo: I was going to swing by and check out the progress while bringing some new hardware. :woot:

I took mine off a while ago. Just checked. They are 1.5" bolts. Have no idea why he would need longer ones. There is also a washer. I bought mine seperate. Dont think mine came with bolts.

I'll check the length for you tomorrow. Don't remember it off the top of my head.

If you go with a longer bolt make sure it doesn't bottom out before getting tight.

Thanks Kert. Seems Jeff is ok with the 1.5" bolts. I wonder if it's even close. What do you think is going on? I wont get an eye on it till Thursday. I'm gunna lose sleep over this lol

When I bought mine a couple years ago, the supplied bolts were a bit too short and the last one stripped out the housing on the way to 65 ft lbs (iirc). The stock bolts actually fall quite a bit short of contacting all the threads, so I ended up getting the longest bolts I could use without bottoming out. There were enough threads that I didn't have to helicoil the stripped one.

I think the ones I used were 1/2" longer than Kert's, but I don't remember. I'm taking the thing apart today to regear, so if I remember I will post back with the length.

I was just discussing this in another thread. I had to heli-coil 3 of the holes in the 14 bolt housing because of the PO ****ing them up.

When I bolted up my Guardsman, I seem to remember getting bolts that were 1-3/4 inch long from my work (aerospace quality) plus the Heli-coil kit from NAPA.

No complaints here, I hit 65 ft-lbs just fine.

We did switch to a longer bolt at some point. That was quite a while ago though.

Forgot to get that length today to.

I just did a guardsman with a backbone and was not comfortable with the bolt length supplied either. 3.5 threads of engagement was what I got with the supplied bolts if I remember correctly (which is sometimes asking alot :haha:).

I turned down some longer bolts I had around to get a good amount of thread engagement.

Starting to sound like I need to do some investigating.

I bought mine around 7/2010, along with a crap load of other stuff that all fit. :)

I'm going to pick up a couple different lengths. 1.75 and 2" to find out which works out best and report back.

I just went and measured and I used bolts that are 2.25" under head.

A couple years ago I started getting screwed by a fastener supplier that changed my order from bolt length under head to total fastener length without notice, and disregard for the drawings. I'm a one man shop so it was caught the first time.

Anyways my point is there is a good possibility things like this could be happening. Either way I'm still pretty damn happy with this setup I got from Kurt.

just got back from OSH (local best damn hardware store outside an actual hardware store)

Only had 2", so that's what I'ma gunna use.

Oh no, don't take what i said as anything bad against Kert. I love DIY4X stuff, can't beat the strength of everything Kert makes. Plus, his customer service cannot be beaten anywhere, hands down.

This is nothing more than a little oversight. AND my 14 bolt had other issues concerning those bolt holes long before I installed the Guardsman.

I just installed a 1410 yoke on my 14 bolt this morning. While I was down there I re-checked the torque on those bolts because I had to Heli-coil 3 of them. Tight as the day I first tightened the. 65 ft-lbs:waytogo:

I checked our current bolt lengths today.

Guardsman alone gets a 1.75" bolt in the hardware kit. Now, if you actually measure the bolt under the head, its slightly shorter than 1.75". We have found this to be standard in the fastener industry. I don't know why they do that but they do. Maximizing profits I'd assume.

Guardsman with a backbone would recieve a 2" fastener. This may be a hair short but I didn't have a chance to dig into it further.

I'm gona pull a factory length bolt tomorrow and see what it actually measures. If memory serves they are 1" long, i want to double check that though.
