Just found this out and thought I'd share.

@cybrfire will the prices on the "new" parts be the same as they are now or will they go up with the addition of powdercoat?

I'm looking to get a shackle flip, B52's and some front shackle hangers real soon, like this week. Should I wait until Aug 1st or buy now?

He already does powder coating, just changing it to be the default option in Aug. I forgot to get my parts coated on my last order.
I knew he was already powder coating. I put the pic up due to everything getting it come August 1st.

I'm wondering if/ how much the pricing will go up when this happens. I could save myself a few bucks if I order soon if the price is going up due to powdercoat (which I assume it would).

It says you can still get stuff uncoated, just need to pick it that way and I assume it's be cheaper, but that's up to Kert obviously. The coated parts are more expensive than the uncoated right now.

Kerts got this down pretty good now, there was a bit of a learning curve with the oven, gun settings, and prep, and with his blast cabinet/room up and running as well, he can prep as needed for coating. For the cost of the black powder, it beats the hell out of a rattle can job for quality and durability, blows away POR-15 or similar so called state of the art coatings, and beats the hell out of buying a quart of special mix imron or similar catalyzed coating, and still beats that for durability as well. You get a new part that is ready to bolt on, no prep, no paint, no headaches.

Exactly what Zim said, the finish on my diff cover is awesome. Well worth it. Anything I buy from Kert now will be powder coated. So much less hassle and work for me.

Yep, same here. I got my K5 flip years ago in the hammer finish coating. My newer one for my SAS diesel was raw steel.

So here's the lowdown guys.

Things have been headed in this direction for some time now.

Everybody wants things shipped faster and faster and i'm trying to accomplish that as best I can. One issue you run into with bare steel parts is after welding they tend to rust. I hate the idea of shipping a rusted part out. You know most coatings aren't going to stop that from continuing under the coating and eventually it looks terrible. Not good for you or us. Makes our product look terrible on your truck and doesn't say much about our quality. We have been tumbling parts but tumbled, welded parts have a short window before they begin to show rust. Keeping them on the shelf for any length of time doesn't work.

Quality is another view point into the decision to powder coat. For instance, we've been doing the dashes for a long time now. I get pics from our customers from time to time and a lot of our dashes have been rattle canned. While seemingly cheap up front... I really think it a disservice not to powder coat the dashes. This is one product of ours that is built specifically for you so it wouldn't necessarily change the timeline for ordering and leaving it raw aluminum, however, the quality and craftsmanship aren't served by not coating it.

So, the natural solution was to finish the parts and powder coating was the best solution. Currently we are tracking two separate finishes, bare steel and powder coat and its getting very difficult and at times slowing the ship time down. Not much but there is some occasions where it does. Coating everything at this point will stream line things again.

Yep, you will still be able to get a bare steel part however, we will be moving the inventory immediately through sand blast and powder coat. So, your uncoated part will have to be made from scratch and sometimes apart from an inventory batch.

Price changes....A lot of our website listings already show a powder coated price. Those aren't going to change. The custom bare steel price, I haven't fully decided yet. Again, tracking two prices in the system with two specific part numbers is difficult. Tracy has her hands full. I don't like the idea of our customer paying more for an uncoated part. That sounds dumb and unfair. I believe in the end we will only have one price.

That's sort of the short version of things. A lot more considerations went into the decision.

To answer your question specifically, Order now, order after august 1st, the price of the satin black powder coated B52 is what it is. If you really want bare steel, ordering soon is probably better for you. After August 1st there will most likely be lead times for a bare steel part. The price for bare steel will be the same as for a satin black powder coated part.

Kerts got this down pretty good now, there was a bit of a learning curve with the oven, gun settings, and prep, and with his blast cabinet/room up and running as well, he can prep as needed for coating. That's the toughest part of this stuff. It seems cheaper to grab the bare steel parts and throw on your aerosol and go. If you really get down to it, its not.

Making an even comparison is pretty much impossible as well but if we ignore a few details and say aerosol is as good as powder (yeah, right!), we can then make some comparisons. What does a can of brake clean, a can of primer and a couple cans of satin black cost these days? Around here those would cost you around $20.

Our B52 kit with shackles is $30 for satin black. You're almost there.

Now, we're sandblasting every piece prior to powder coating. What is that surface prep worth? Maybe you got a blast cabinet. What is your time worth? If you tell me your time isn't worth anything, I got a job for you! My after hours time is worth a lot and yours should at the very least be time and a half.

The only argument remaining is those that enjoy building their truck and working on it. I get that, believe me I do. One of my favorite parts of all of this stuff. I do not enjoy seeing the finish work go to hell in a few months because of inferior finishing products like aerosol or what have you. It takes longer than that to build a truck. I really like it to look new and nice for a while. Powder coating will get you there and much further.

Can I send all my DIY4X stuff back for powdercoating? :haha:
