I was wondering how you guys are registering your blazers?
Are they commercial like trucks or like SUV?
mine is commercial and its making my registration and insurance on my 81 blazer hirer then on my 05 Tahoe and the Tahoe is full coverage.
dose any one know where to find out what the rules are on this? the dmv has been no help at all other than saying that open cargo area =commercial registration
i don't thank that jeeps are commercial so my blazer shouldn't ether

thanks for any help

I have two 1973 Blazers (full verts) properly registered in California. If the back was an open cargo area they would be correct and you would need a commercial license.

In the case of blazers (all blazers) they came with federally approved passenger accommodations in the back including seat-belts. As long as there are approved passenger carrying accommodations you are NOT required to register as commercial. Accommodations = NOT OPEN Cargo area but OPEN Passenger compartment.

Reinstall your seats and seat-belts and get your registration changed from commercial. Simple as that.

On a further note, one of the blazers was purchased new off the showroom floor by my father and it never had a commercial plate on it.

Cheers,

Rufus

I cant stress this enough when you go and talk to the DMV to change the registration. It is "Open Passenger Area" NOT "Cargo Area". That is all you should need to get it registered properly.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the help when I went down for vin verification he changed it to commercial and insisted it was a truck and his supervisor said the same thing it even had the top on and the seats in it
Ill look in to getting it changed that will help put more $$ into the project.

Go find a different DMV...FAST! They obviously did not know what they were talking about. When you do go to the other office be nice and curtious, you will get much further with a pound of honey vs a galon of vinagar.

Last year I registered my M1009 CUCV for the first time. The only question that came up was the weight. I showed the military lift tag on the door with the specs... was done deal.

Mine is registered as a SUV, not commercial.

Try a different DMV office.

My registration reads: 1988 Chevrolet, MPV(K5), id imagine thats what a suburban would read as well. You can still tell your buddies it is a truck though;)

In California a Blazer is considered and registered as a station wagon or a Utility vehicle (NOT commercially licensed). The only difference between non commercial and commercial is the addition of the weight fees. You used to be able to registered a truck as non commercial IF you had a camper installed on the truck BUT if that camper ever came off and you carried so much as a bag of groceries you could get a heavy citation for carrying a "load" in a non commercially registered vehicle.

I'm looking at my registration as I type this and mine is listed as UT (Utility Vehicle) under body type model on the registration card. Like was already said, you need to go find a different DMV quick.

Ive had 6 registered blazers all as passenger UT (utility) designation. DMV employees are for the most part retarded and only know what they see on paper, if it becomes a major issue go to your local CHP office and have them do a VIN verification on that form it states the type of vehicle it is and when they show it as a utility passenger take it to the DMV and show them again.

I will tell you what is retarded. My local DMV decided in their infinite wisdom to close on most Fridays. I got there today to do some registration and find about 15 vehicles in the lot with people milling around cussing and kicking things. DMV was closed and I was among many that were very pissed off after driving some time to get there. I probably should have checked first but I never would have guessed they would be closed during the week. Moron Californian government people who have ****ed up our economy so bad that they can't provide simple services....

DMV's in this area of California have been doing this for quite a few years now (probably closer to 10 years).

Next time you can check here for days and hours of operation. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/fo/offices/toc_fo.htm

I know, but I go there so infrequently that I forgot. I was pissed at myself for not doing some homework first too. I need to get this new/old F150 registered. It will be a non-op for a long while but I don't want to rack up late fees. No sense donating my own money to anchor babies....

Man I'm glad my stuff is registered in Washington! No late fees, no commercial vehicle issues, no smog checks, nothing! But then again, WA is starting to charge higher tag rates for larger vehicles. I think the magical number is 6000GVWR. Once over that number, extra tag fees are based on the GVWR of the vehicle.
